Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani held a meeting with senior military officials at the General Headquarters (GHQ) on Tuesday following his return from China. The Army Chief was briefed about Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani’s recent interview to a Chinese newspaper concerning General Kayani and ISI DG Ahmed Shuja Pasha’s statements to the Supreme Court.  Kayani was on a five-day visit to meet with the Chinese military and political leadership when the prime minister told the Chinese media that the replies submitted by General Kayani and General Pasha in the Supreme Court in memogate case were illegal as they were not approved by the government.

According to sources, the military leadership was extremely annoyed over the prime minister’s statement to the Chinese media at the time when General Kayani was on an important visit to the neighboring country. According to military officials, the statement at that particular time was aimed at sabotaging General Kayani’s China visit. The sources said the military leadership also expressed surprise over continuous changing of stance by the prime minister regarding the relations of civil and military leadership. The military leadership was also annoyed over the use of Chinese media to target the security institutions, the sources said. Sources also said that the following 24 hours are extremely important as far as civil-military relations are concerned.

The Corps Commanders’ meeting, scheduled to take place next week, was also postponed. A new date for the meeting has not yet been announced.
