Director-General ISPR Maj-Gen AtharAbbas has said that the Army was seriously concerned over the grave situation in Karachi and wanted immediate end to violence. Talking to a foreign news agency, Gen Athar said the law-enforcement agencies should launch indiscriminate action against the perpetrators of violence and saboteurs to secure peace in the mega city. He said the Army was seriously concerned over the death of innocent citizens in the mega City. He said all the secret agencies were sharing information with the police whose prime responsibility was to maintain peace and launch crackdown against the criminal elements.

He said the Army desired that all activities of terrorism should end in Karachi. The DG ISPR expressed the hope that action against terrorists would prove successful. The Army spokesman said 10 out of the 40 children who had been taken into custody by the Taliban had returned. He made it clear that no incident of kidnapping had occurred in Bajaur Agency. He said that Mamoon tribe settled along the Pak-Afghan border and the members of the tribe under an agreement could freely move across the border. He told the foreign news agency that on Eid day (Wednesday) elders and youth of the Mamoon tribe had gone to Afghanistan where 40 persons including children were abducted by terrorists. Of those kidnapped, 10 had been released while the rest were still under the custody of the terrorists.

He said the elders of the Mamoon tribe were negotiating with the kidnappers and two Jirgas across the border were devising strategy to prevent any such incident in future. He said the political administration in the area had time and again informed the people that it was not secure to cross the border as the situation is volatile. Responding to a question, he said like the rest of the country, Army was also looking at the Karachi situation with grave concerns. Karachi leaves lasting impact on the economy and law and order situation of the entire country, he said. To a question about Zulfiqar Mirza’s statement quoting Rehman Malik that the Army and ISI would come into action and dismantle the government if he (Malik) tried to net insurgents, Gen Athar said he would not comment on Mirza’s statements and Rehman Malik could accept or reject the statement referred to him.
