Quaid-e-Azam's life has been fascinating the people always and will continue to do so. The spiritual aspects of his life are getting revealed gradually and now the youth must understand that they must not make Jinnah only their political leader but also a spiritual inspiration. To get to the depth of this inspiration, one must have one thing in mind that Allama Iqbal was the main motivational force behind him that made him from Jinnah to Quaid-e-Azam.
Baba Quaid's spiritual bond with Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.w) was well established even before he came into active politics. The fact that Baba Quaid took admission in Lincoln's Inn, a college of law in England, for the sole reason that on its entrance was written the sentence that "Muhammad- The person gave the best law to this planet earth" From this fact, we can easily conclude that Baba Quaid knew the greatnest of Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.w) even in his teenage.
Talking to a gathering in 1932, it was Baba Iqbal who said that "Allah has blessed Mr. Jinnah with such a quality that I can't see in any other Muslim of Hindustan, that he is uncorruptable and unpurchasable" Allama Iqbal was the person who tried to persuade Baba Quaid to return to India in early 1930s during his self-exile. Jinnah now evolved from Muhammad Ali Jinnah to become Quaid-e-Azam in the near future becoming the only leader representing 100 million muslim of sub-continent, taking them out of the mental and physical cage of slavery and carving a new homeland for them where they can live as free men. Baba Iqbal played a guiding star's role in Baba Quaid's life guiding him in all ups and downs and making him firm enough to stand unmoved on his stance and pan-islamism. Baba Quaid on the other hand made Baba Iqbal his spiritual leader and followed every advise whatsoever. This is not a mere claim on my behalf but a documented fact. All the letters exchanged between both have been saved.
After the Pakistan Resolution was moved in 1940, Quaid-e-Azam visited Baba Iqbal's tomb and said to his secretary Matlub-ul-Hassan Syed "Iqbal is not among us today, if he were alive, he would have been really happy after knowing that we did what he expected from us "
Iqbal was an ideologue, a visionary, a thinker and a philosopher. The implementation and execution of all his vision, philosophy and ideology was carried out by none other but Baba Quaid. I don't want to say that Baba Quaid lacked any sort of political vision but this is indeed a fact that the spiritual spirit in his political vision was infused by Baba Iqbal.
Baba Quaid said after the death of Baba Iqbal:
"For me, he was a friend, a guide, a mentor and a spiritual inspiration. In present time, no one has understood Islam better than Iqbal, and I feel proud to say that under his leadership, I worked as a soldier"Similarly, Maulana Shabbir Ahmed Usmani, who led the funeral prayers of Quaid-e-Azam told that Rasoolullah(s.a.w.w) came in his dream and told him "Jinnah is my soldier, support him!!"
Addressing Ismail College Student union in Bombay on 12 August, 1939, Quaid-e-Azam said:
"I was born a Muslim, I am a Muslim and would like to die as a Muslim."
It is said some defeatist-minded secularists that Quaid-e-Azam was a secular which mean that he did not wanted to involve Islam in political i.e. Islam is only a matter between man and God. When asked "What are the essential features of religion and a religious state?" Quaid-e-Azam replied:
"When I hear the word religion, my mind thinks at once, regarding the English language and the British usage , of private relation between man and God. but I know fully well that according to Islam, the word is not restricted to the English connotation, I am neither a Maulvi nor a Mullah nor do i claim Islamic theology, but i have studied in my own way the holy Quran and Islamic tenets. This magnificent book is full of guidance for human life, whether spiritual, political, social, economical leaving no issue untouched"
This is no less than a slap for all the liberal fascists who put such a fatuous blame upon Quaid-e-Azam.
Futhermore when asked "What is the distinctive feature of Islamic state?" he replied in the same gathering addressing the students of Usmania University Hyderabad in August 1941:
"There is a special feature of Islamic State, which must not be overlooked. There, obedience is due to God and God alone, which takes the practical shape in the observance of Quranic principles and commands. In Islam, obedience is due neither to a king, nor to a parliament, not to any other organisation. It is the Quranic provisions, which determines the limit of our freedom in social and political spheres, in other words, Islamic State is an agency for enforcement of Quranic principles and injunctions"
So, here Quaid means that neither Parliament, nor President or PM is supreme, but only Allah is supreme!
In a message to N.W.F.P Muslim Students Federation, in April 1943, Quaid-e-Azam said:
"You have asked me to give you a message, What message can I give you? We have got a great message in the Quran for our guidance and enlightenment"
In just over seven years, from 1940 to 1947, Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah transformed Asia. He woke sleeping giants, the Muslims of South Asia, and gave them a free homeland they had never dreamed of. He ended their slavery, which had consumed their vitality, dignity and wealth for nearly two centuries since their treacherous defeat of Siraj-ud-Daulla at Plasseyin 1757 due to the treachery of Mir Jaffar.
It was because of his greatness that he turned a hindu lady, ratti into a great Muslim lady Maryam Jinnah. Lord Reading, the Viceroy of India offered Jinnah Knighthood, which he declined saying that he prefers to be called plain Mr. Jinnah than Sir Muhammad Ali Jinnah. It is interesting to know that after Mr. Jinnah’s refusal to be Knighted, when Lord Reading at an informal reception, turned to Mrs. Maryam (Ratti) Jinnah and asked her to request her husband to agree to be Knighted, she promptly retorted, “If my husband accepts Knighthood, I will ask separation from him”[1]
Mr. H.V. Hodson, an eminent British historian sums up Mr. Jinnah’s character thus, “One thing is certain he did not change for any venal motive. Not even his political enemies ever accused Jinnah of corruption or self-seeking. He could be bought by no one, and for no price…… He was a steadfast idealist as well as a man of scrupulous honour.”
His greatness was known from the fact that in his mammoth public meetings where almost over eighty percent of the participants could not understand even one single word of English, they would listen to him in pin drop silence and amazingly would clap and raise zindabad slogan at the points of emphasis in his speech. Normally, only fools would clap on what they don't understand, but the mob at that time was awakened by the tireless efforts of Quaid and turned it into a nation. The nation had blind trust in this pious soul which was the sole reason that Pakistan came into being in-spite of such big resistance.
It was universally known back then that elderly people in the remote villages when talking to young people hearing radio or reading newspaper would ask, “what has Baba (Father) said today?” but in the same breath would reply themselves “whatever he has said must be true”. These villagers would call Jinnah, ‘Baba’ with affection.
Prof. Sharif-ul-Muhahid, an eminent Pakistan historian comments about Quaid-e-Azam:
“Jinnah had termed the Muslims a separate entity in 1935. He upgraded them to a third party status in 1937 and to nationhood in 1940. And within seven years he secured a national home-land for that nation. That was SAINT JINNAH – the invincible!"[2]
Ata-ur-Rabbani further writes:
I was the fortunate one to accompany him. Quaid-e-Azam was happy and relaxed. On the way to Eidgah I saw yet another side of the Quaid. So far we had known him as a leader, a politician, a legislator, a lawyer and a well dressed and a westernized man in manners and etiquette but today I was pleasantly surprised when he gave me a masterly discourse on the philosophy and significance of Ramadan and Eid. As his limousine left the Governor-General house he asked me as to how many days in the Ramadan I had fasted. “About half of the month, Sir” was my reply. “Why half of the month? Why not the full month? You are young and healthy”. To this I meekly replied that, “I was on the move Sir for most of the month”, “you should complete the counts now that you are settled”. He then went on to explain to me in depth the significance and the philosophy behind fasting. He said that besides the religious spirit and purification of the soul, “…fasting teaches mankind discipline, self control, self sacrifice and devotion, abstention from all evil for one month, prepares him to face all forces of evil with discipline and determination. Besides, it tones up the physical system and is good for health. But one has to be careful at iftar as here again it is discipline which requires us not to over eat to make up for the lost meals during the day."[1]
While Quaid-e-Azam was returning from the Eidgah, he ordered the driver to take a different route to Governor General House. This shows his love for Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.w) and how keenly he followed the sunnah.
Dr. Col. Illahi Bakhsh, one of the last personal doctors of Quaid-e-Azam writes that Quaid-e-Azam said in his last days:
"To me being alive or dead is equal as I have done the task which was assigned to me"[3]
Similarly, In his book, Dr. Riaz Ali Shah, one of the last personal doctors of Quaid-e-Azam writes:
Quaid-e-Azam said in a loud voice: "This is the Divine Will. This is the spiritual blessing(faizaan) of Hazrat Muhammad (s.a.w.w) that the nation which the British imperialists and Hindu industrialists wanted to erase from Indian peninsula, that nation is now independent. It has its own country, own emblem, own government, currency and constitution. Can any nation have any better gift from Allah Almighty? This is the Caliphate which Allah Almighty promised to Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.w) that if your ummah takes the right path, we will grant them with kingship of earth. Its a duty of Muslims to defend this great gift of Allah Almighty. Pakistan is a gift from God and to safeguard it is the utmost duty over every laborer, children, elder and youth...."[4]
The words "Divine will" and "Caliphate" are quite evident in the above statement. Only a saint can utter such words and speak about Allah's plans in the region with so much courage and confirmation.
Knowing all this one can easily imagine the spiritual level of Quaid-e-Azam and his utmost love for Pakistan, Islam and most important of all Aaqa (s.a.w.w). He was the soldier of Islam, he is a legend and his character and personality is a legacy for us. We are the most honored nation of the world that Allah Almighty gifted us with such a charismatic Quaid. May Allah bless us to follow his footsteps (Ameen)
