Redrawing the Middle East; Project 'New Middle East'

The term “New Middle East” was introduced to the world in June 2006 in Tel Aviv by U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice (who was credited by the Western media for coining the term) in replacement of the older and more imposing term, the “Greater Middle East.”

This shift in foreign policy phraseology coincided with the inauguration of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) Oil Terminal in the Eastern Mediterranean. The term and conceptualization of the “New Middle East,” was subsequently heralded by the U.S. Secretary of State and the Israeli Prime Minister at the height of  the Anglo-American sponsored Israeli siege of Lebanon. Prime Minister Olmert and Secretary Rice had informed the international media that a project for a “New Middle East” was being launched from Lebanon.

This announcement was a confirmation of an Anglo-American-Israeli “military roadmap” in the Middle East. This project, which has been in the  planning stages for several years, consists in creating an arc of instability, chaos, and violence extending from Lebanon, Palestine, and Syria to Iraq, the Persian Gulf, Iran, and the borders of NATO-garrisoned Afghanistan.

The “New Middle East” project was introduced publicly by Washington and Tel Aviv with the expectation that Lebanon would be the pressure point for realigning the whole Middle East and thereby unleashing the forces of “constructive chaos.” This “constructive chaos” –which generates conditions of violence and warfare throughout the region– would in turn be used so that the United States, Britain, and Israel could redraw the map of the Middle East in accordance with their geo-strategic needs and objectives.

New Middle East Map

Secretary Condoleezza Rice stated during a press conference that “[w]hat we’re seeing here [in regards to the destruction of Lebanon and the Israeli attacks on Lebanon], in a sense, is the growing—the ‘birth pangs’—of a ‘New Middle East’ and whatever we do we [meaning the United States] have to be certain that we’re pushing forward to the New Middle East [and] not going back to the old one.”1

Secretary Rice was immediately criticized for her statements both within Lebanon and internationally for expressing indifference to the suffering of an entire nation, which was being bombed  indiscriminately by the Israeli Air Force.

The Anglo-American Military Roadmap in the Middle East and Central Asia

U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s speech on the “New Middle East” had set the stage. The Israeli attacks on Lebanon –which had been fully endorsed by Washington and London– have further compromised and validated the existence of the geo-strategic objectives of the United States, Britain, and Israel.

According to Professor Mark Levine the “neo-liberal globalizers and neo-conservatives, and ultimately the Bush Administration, would latch on to creative destruction as a way of describing the process by which they hoped to create their new world orders,” and that “creative destruction [in] the United States was, in the words of neo-conservative philosopher and Bush adviser Michael Ledeen, ‘an awesome revolutionary force’ for (…) creative destruction…”2

Anglo-American occupied Iraq, particularly Iraqi Kurdistan, seems to be the preparatory ground for the balkanization (division) and finlandization (pacification) of the Middle East. Already the legislative framework, under the Iraqi Parliament and the name of Iraqi federalization, for the partition of Iraq into three portions is being drawn out. (See map below)

Moreover, the Anglo-American military roadmap appears to be vying an entry into Central Asia via the Middle East. The Middle East, Afghanistan, and Pakistan are stepping stones for extending U.S. influence into the former Soviet Union and the ex-Soviet Republics of Central Asia. The Middle East is to some extent the southern tier of Central Asia. Central Asia in turn is also termed as “Russia’s Southern Tier” or the Russian “Near Abroad.”

Many Russian and Central Asian scholars, military planners, strategists, security advisors, economists, and politicians consider Central Asia (“Russia’s Southern Tier”) to be the vulnerable and “soft under-belly” of the Russian Federation.3

It should be noted that in his book, The Grand Chessboard: American Primacy and Its Geo-strategic Imperatives, Zbigniew Brzezinski, a former U.S. National Security Advisor, alluded to the modern Middle East as a control lever of an area he, Brzezinski, calls the Eurasian Balkans.

The Eurasian Balkans consists of the Caucasus (Georgia, the Republic of Azerbaijan, and Armenia) and Central Asia (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan) and to some extent both Iran and Turkey. Iran and Turkey both form the northernmost tiers of the Middle East (excluding the Caucasus4) that edge into Europe and the former Soviet Union.

The Map of the “New Middle East”

A relatively unknown map of the Middle East, NATO-garrisoned Afghanistan, and Pakistan has been circulating around strategic, governmental, NATO, policy and military circles since mid-2006. It has been causally allowed to surface in public, maybe in an attempt to build consensus and to slowly prepare the general public for possible, maybe even cataclysmic, changes in the Middle East. This is a map of a redrawn and restructured Middle East identified as the “New Middle East.”

Note: The following map was prepared by Lieutenant-Colonel Ralph Peters. It was published in the Armed Forces Journal in June 2006, Peters is a retired colonel of the U.S. National War Academy. (Map Copyright Lieutenant-Colonel Ralph Peters 2006).

Although the map does not officially reflect Pentagon doctrine, it has been used in a training program at NATO’s Defense College for senior military officers. This map, as well as other similar maps, has most probably been used at the National War Academy as well as in military planning circles.

This map of the “New Middle East” seems to be based on several other maps, including older maps of potential boundaries in the Middle East extending back to the era of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson and World War I. This map is showcased and presented as the brainchild of retired Lieutenant-Colonel (U.S. Army) Ralph Peters, who believes the redesigned borders contained in the map will fundamentally solve the problems of the contemporary Middle East.

The map of the “New Middle East” was a key element in the retired Lieutenant-Colonel’s book, Never Quit the Fight, which was released to the public on July 10, 2006. This map of a redrawn Middle East was also published, under the title of Blood Borders: How a better Middle East would look, in the U.S. military’s Armed Forces Journal with commentary from Ralph Peters.5

It should be noted that Lieutenant-Colonel Peters was last posted to the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence, within the U.S. Defence Department, and has been one of the Pentagon’s foremost authors with numerous essays on strategy for military journals and U.S. foreign policy.

It has been written that Ralph Peters’ “four previous books on strategy have been highly influential in government and military circles,” but one can be pardoned for asking if in fact quite the opposite could be taking place. Could it be Lieutenant-Colonel Peters is revealing and putting forward what Washington D.C. and its strategic planners have anticipated for the Middle East?

The concept of a redrawn Middle East has been presented as a “humanitarian” and “righteous” arrangement that would benefit the people(s) of the Middle East and its peripheral regions. According to Ralph Peter’s:

 

International borders are never completely just. But the degree of injustice they inflict upon those whom frontiers force together or separate makes an enormous difference — often the difference between freedom and oppression, tolerance and atrocity, the rule of law and terrorism, or even peace and war.

The most arbitrary and distorted borders in the world are in Africa and the Middle East. Drawn by self-interested Europeans (who have had sufficient trouble defining their own frontiers), Africa’s borders continue to provoke the deaths of millions of local inhabitants. But the unjust borders in the Middle East — to borrow from Churchill — generate more trouble than can be consumed locally.

While the Middle East has far more problems than dysfunctional borders alone — from cultural stagnation through scandalous inequality to deadly religious extremism — the greatest taboo in striving to understand the region’s comprehensive failure isn’t Islam, but the awful-but-sacrosanct international boundaries worshipped by our own diplomats.

Of course, no adjustment of borders, however draconian, could make every minority in the Middle East happy. In some instances, ethnic and religious groups live intermingled and have intermarried. Elsewhere, reunions based on blood or belief might not prove quite as joyous as their current proponents expect. The boundaries projected in the maps accompanying this article redress the wrongs suffered by the most significant “cheated” population groups, such as the Kurds, Baluch and Arab Shia [Muslims], but still fail to account adequately for Middle Eastern Christians, Bahais, Ismailis, Naqshbandis and many another numerically lesser minorities. And one haunting wrong can never be redressed with a reward of territory: the genocide perpetrated against the Armenians by the dying Ottoman Empire.

Yet, for all the injustices the borders re-imagined here leave unaddressed, without such major boundary revisions, we shall never see a more peaceful Middle East.

Even those who abhor the topic of altering borders would be well-served to engage in an exercise that attempts to conceive a fairer, if still imperfect, amendment of national boundaries between the Bosphorus and the Indus. Accepting that international statecraft has never developed effective tools — short of war — for readjusting faulty borders, a mental effort to grasp the Middle East’s “organic” frontiers nonetheless helps us understand the extent of the difficulties we face and will continue to face. We are dealing with colossal, man-made deformities that will not stop generating hatred and violence until they are corrected. 6

 

“Necessary Pain”

Besides believing that there is “cultural stagnation” in the Middle East, it must be noted that Ralph Peters admits that his propositions are “draconian” in nature, but he insists that they are necessary pains for the people of the Middle East. This view of necessary pain and suffering is in startling parallel to U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s belief that the devastation of Lebanon by the Israeli military was a necessary pain or “birth pang” in order to create the “New Middle East” that Washington, London, and Tel Aviv envision.

Moreover, it is worth noting that the subject of the Armenian Genocide is being politicized and stimulated in Europe to offend Turkey.

The overhaul, dismantlement, and reassembly of the nation-states of the Middle East have been packaged as a solution to the hostilities in the Middle East, but this is categorically misleading, false, and fictitious. The advocates of a “New Middle East” and redrawn boundaries in the region avoid and fail to candidly depict the roots of the problems and conflicts in the contemporary Middle East.

What the media does not acknowledge is the fact that almost all major conflicts afflicting the Middle East are the consequence of overlapping Anglo-American-Israeli agendas.

Many of the problems affecting the contemporary Middle East are the result of the deliberate aggravation of pre-existing regional tensions. Sectarian division, ethnic tension and internal violence have been traditionally exploited by the United States and Britain in various parts of the globe including Africa, Latin America, the Balkans, and the Middle East.

Iraq is just one of many examples of the Anglo-American strategy of “divide and conquer.” Other examples are Rwanda, Yugoslavia, the Caucasus, and Afghanistan.

Amongst the problems in the contemporary Middle East is the lack of genuine democracy which U.S. and British foreign policy has actually been deliberately obstructing.  Western-style “Democracy” has been a requirement only for those Middle Eastern states which do not conform to Washington’s political demands.

Invariably, it constitutes a pretext for confrontation. Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan are examples of undemocratic states that the United States has no problems with because they are firmly aligned within the Anglo-American orbit or sphere.

 

Additionally, the United States has deliberately blocked or displaced genuine democratic movements in the Middle East from Iran in 1953 (where a U.S./U.K. sponsored coup was staged against the democratic government of Prime Minister Mossadegh) to Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey, the Arab Sheikdoms, and Jordan where the Anglo-American alliance supports military control, absolutists, and dictators in one form or another. The latest example of this is Palestine.

The Turkish Protest at NATO’s Military College in Rome

Lieutenant-Colonel Ralph Peters’ map of the “New Middle East” has sparked angry reactions in Turkey. According to Turkish press releases on September 15, 2006 the map of the “New Middle East” was displayed in NATO’s Military College in Rome, Italy. It was additionally reported that Turkish officers were immediately outraged by the presentation of a portioned and segmented Turkey.8

The map received some form of approval from the U.S. National War Academy before it was unveiled in front of NATO officers in Rome.

The Turkish Chief of Staff, General Buyukanit, contacted the U.S. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Peter Pace, and protested the event and the exhibition of the redrawn map of the Middle East, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.9

Furthermore the Pentagon has gone out of its way to assure Turkey that the map does not reflect official U.S. policy and objectives in the region, but this seems to be conflicting with Anglo-American actions in the Middle East and NATO-garrisoned Afghanistan.

The redrawing and partition of the Middle East from the Eastern Mediterranean shores of Lebanon and Syria to Anatolia (Asia Minor), Arabia, the Persian Gulf, and the Iranian Plateau responds to broad economic, strategic and military objectives, which are part of a longstanding Anglo-American and Israeli agenda in the region.

The Middle East has been conditioned by outside forces into a powder keg that is ready to explode with the right trigger, possibly the launching of Anglo-American and/or Israeli air raids against Iran and Syria. A wider war in the Middle East could result in redrawn borders that are strategically advantageous to Anglo-American interests and Israel.

NATO-garrisoned Afghanistan has been successfully divided, all but in name. Animosity has been inseminated in the Levant, where a Palestinian civil war is being nurtured and divisions in Lebanon agitated. The Eastern Mediterranean has been successfully militarized by NATO. Syria and Iran continue to be demonized by the Western media, with a view to justifying a military agenda.

In turn, the Western media has fed, on a daily basis, incorrect and biased notions that the populations of Iraq cannot co-exist and that the conflict is not a war of occupation but a “civil war” characterised by domestic strife between Shiites, Sunnis and Kurds.

Attempts at intentionally creating animosity between the different ethno-cultural and religious groups of the Middle East have been systematic. In fact, they are part of a carefully designed covert intelligence agenda.

Even more ominous, many Middle Eastern governments, such as that of Saudi Arabia, are assisting Washington in fomenting divisions between Middle Eastern populations. The ultimate objective is to weaken the resistance movement against foreign occupation through a “divide and conquer strategy” which serves Anglo-American and Israeli interests in the broader region.

Bill Gates - The master of Eugenics aims at reducing world population to bits

When Bill Gates, founder of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which provides vaccines to third world countries, promoted decreasing the population of the world and favoring the ‘death panel’, it shocked many people. Bill Gates believes that “instead of spending millions of dollars on old people who just have months to live, the money should be spent elsewhere, where it can actually benefit people”.
Two years ago, the Microsoft billionaire, unveiled his mission to reduce the world’s population through vaccines during a TEDx presentation. As Gates rambles on about CO2 emissions, and its effects on climate change, he injects without pause, that in order to get CO2 to zero, “probably one of these numbers is going to have to get pretty close to zero.” He then goes on to describe how the first number, P (for People) might be reduced.

“The world today has 6.8 billion people”, said Gates, “that’s headed up to about 9 billion. Now if we do a really great job on new vaccines, health care, reproductive health services, we could lower that by perhaps 10 or 15 percent.”
In January 2010, at the Davos World Economic Forum, Gates announced his foundation would give $10 billion (€7.5 billion) over the next decade to develop and deliver new vaccines to children in the developing world.

For those who haven’t figured it out, the primary focus of the Gates Foundation is vaccinations, especially in Africa and other underdeveloped countries. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is a founding member of the GAVI Alliance (Global Alliance for Vaccinations and Immunization) in partnership with the World Bank, WHO and the vaccine industry. The goal of GAVI is to vaccinate every newborn child in the developing world.
How could that be a bad thing? Sounds like noble philanthropic work, doesn’t it? Unfortunately, the vaccine industry has been repeatedly caught forcing dangerous (unsafe, untested or proven harmful) vaccines onto Third World populations – vaccines they cannot get rid of in the West. Some organizations have suggested that the true aim of the vaccinations is to make people sicker and even more susceptible to disease and premature death.

Back in May of 2009, The London Times reported that some of the “richest people in the world met in New York to discuss their favorite causes”. The group, which included such notables as Bill Gates, David Rockefeller, Ted Turner, Oprah Winfrey, Warren Buffett, George Soros and Michael Bloomberg, decided, during that meeting, their money would best be spent on reducing the world’s population.
The London Times said, “the meeting took place at the home of Sir Paul Nurse, a British Nobel Prize winning biochemist, and president of Rockefeller University”, and that Gates was the organizer of the gathering. In February of 2009, Gates outlined a project to reduce the world’s population by one billion – eliminating one of out every projected nine people on the planet, or 11 percent of the world’s population.

Gates is the son of William S. Gates, Sr., an 83 year old, who is the co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The public details of his life includes little beyond his official biography at the foundation, which says he was a Seattle lawyer, World War II veteran, nonprofit volunteer and father of three. What’s missing is that he is also one of the founding father’s of the Eugenics movement and Planned Parenthood along with their partner in most everything – the Rockefeller Foundation.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, along with David Rockefeller’s Rockefeller Foundation, the creators of the GMO biotechnology, are also financing a project called The Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) headed by former UN chief, Kofi Annan. Accepting the role as AGRA head in June 2007 Annan expressed his “gratitude to the Rockefeller Foundation, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and all others who support our African campaign.” The AGRA board is dominated by people from both the Gates’ and Rockefeller foundations.

Monsanto, DuPont, Dow, Syngenta and other major GMO agribusiness giants are reported at the heart of AGRA, using it as a back-door to spread their patented GMO seeds across Africa under the deceptive label, ‘bio-technology,’ a euphemism for genetically engineered patented seeds. The person from the Gates Foundation responsible for its work with AGRA is Dr. Robert Horsch, a 25-year Monsanto GMO veteran who was on the team that developed Monsanto’s RoundUp Ready GMO technologies. His job is reportedly to use Gates’ money to introduce/force GMOs into Africa.
Health experts point out that were the intent of Gates really to improve the health and well-being of black Africans, the same hundreds of millions of dollars the Gates Foundation has invested in untested and unsafe vaccines could be used in providing minimal sanitary water and sewage systems. Vaccinating a child who then goes to drink feces-polluted river water is hardly healthy in any respect.

Of course, cleaning up the water and sewage systems of Africa would revolutionize the health conditions of the Continent – and who would benefit from that?

Pakistan's top Nuclear Scientist and national hero Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan said that Prime Minister's APC will be proved as nothing but wastage of time. The same people who reject Parliament's unanimous resolutions, we cannot expect from them to implement APC's resolution. Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan said that Asif Ali Zardari's silence on American threats against Pakistan is meaningful. The way American Terrorist president Obama "baracked" against Pakistan and the Pakistani Nation, President Zardari must have responded appropriately. Dr. Qadeer slammed PML(N) head Mr. Nawaz Sharif's role in APC and said that on one hand American President is pushing Mike Mullen and Pakistan Army and on the other hand, Nawaz Sharif is doing the same against his own Army during an ongoing on-ground battle which is being bravely fought by gallant Pakistan Army soldiers for this motherland. In response to a question, Dr. Qadeer said that both PPP and PML(N) have thoroughly lost their credibility and both have badly disappointed the people of Pakistan. In response to another question, Dr. Qadeer said that American Puppet Pervez Musharraf has "no future in Pakistan". In response to another question, he said that all good pro-Pakistan men including Imran Khan can join hands on a certain platform to form an alternate leadership of Pakistan. He vowed to support them along with his friends in their aim of pulling Pakistan out from crisis.

Reko Diq: Balochistan issues Notice of Objections to TCC

The Balochistan government has objected to a mining lease being sought by a joint venture between Antofagasta and Barrick Gold, further delaying a major planned copper and gold project in the country’s southwest. London-listed Antofagasta and Canadian group Barrick Gold are partners in the Tethyan Cooper Co (TCC) joint venture which has a 75 per cent interest in the Reko Diq project and submitted an application for a licence in February. Samia Ali Shah, a spokeswoman for TCC, which has been meeting officials in recent months in the hope a decision would be reached in September, said Balochistan had raised “observations” to its application for a mining licence. “We have been asked to reply to the observations raised by the government of Balochistan within 30 days”, she said.

A Balochistan official who asked not to be named confirmed Chief Minister Nawab Mohammad Aslam Raisani had raised “objections” to the granting of a licence. “The TCC was served the notice of objections yesterday (Wednesday)”, he said. Antofagasta and Barrick spent $200 million in 2006 buying the exploration licence from rival BHP. Reko Diq - which will be only the second significant project in the mineral-rich region, along with smaller, Chinese-operated Saindak - holds an estimated 5.9 billion tonnes of mineral resources, with an average copper grade of 0.41 percent and an average gold grade of 0.22 grams per tonne. The $3.3 billion project has faced difficulties since last year when Balochistan said it would cancel the project amid growing anger over outsiders exploiting natural resources in country’s biggest and poorest province. Balochistan was initially barred by the Supreme Court from giving approval until a separate investigation over the awarding of the concession to TCC was over. In May, the court said the provincial government could decide on the lease.

Army concerned over Karachi

The military voiced concern for the first time on Monday over ethnic and political violence in the country’s financial capital that has killed 800 people so far this year. The military spoke out after generals met during 141st Corps Commanders’ Conference with Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani in the chair at Army Headquarters in Rawalpindi. The participants of the conference were briefed in detail regarding ongoing law enforcement operations in Kurram and Mohmand agencies within the perspective of evolving security dynamic. The participants also discussed the security situation in the country in general and Karachi in particular.

“The forum expressed concern over the law and order situation in Karachi and its ramifications or implications on the national economy”, the military said in a statement. Parts of the Arabian Sea port city have become battlegrounds with authorities struggling to stem the violence. The independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) says 800 people, most of them poor, have died since January, including 300 last month alone. The HCRP says the violence in Karachi is the deadliest since 1995, when more than 900 killings were reported in the first half of the year. The HRCP previously said 490 people were killed in the first six months of the year and on Friday that another 300 people died in July. Much of the violence has been blamed on tensions between supporters of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the Awami National Party (ANP).

The government launched a peace drive and sent hundreds of extra security forces into the troubled neighbourhoods, and calm has held for a week. The military said recent government measures were expected to “help redress the situation”. The violence has also affected economic activities in Karachi, the country’s largest city. Several political parties, including the MQM and ANP, have urged the army to conduct operations in Karachi to end the violence. Accusations and counter-accusations have continued between the leaders of the MQM and those of the ANP in particular and MQM and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) in general.

Supreme Court gives govt ‘last 24 hours’

ISLAMABAD – Declining prime minister’s request for more time to submit reply in reinstatement of Sohail Ahmad as Secretary Establishment, the Supreme Court on Thursday directed the attorney general to present PM’s written reaction on the matter today (Friday). As a six-member bench of the apex court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry resumed hearing of the suo motu case regarding corruption in Haj arrangements in 2010, Attorney General Maulvi Anwarul Haq told the court that the prime minister has been apprised of all the details of the case. He also prayed for more time until Monday for the restoration of establishment secretary. The CJP said that much time could not be given and ordered to submit the answer by today (Friday).

Sohail Ahmed had been made an OSD (officer on special duty) by the government on Tuesday, about two hours after he submitted to the Supreme Court a notification transferring Hussain Asghar, the IG of Gilgit-Baltistan, back to the FIA in the face of a stern court warning of immediate action against him on contempt of court charge for not complying with its orders. Irritated by the demotion of the top bureaucrat for obeying its orders, the court on Wednesday directed the attorney general to personally convey to Prime Minister Gilani the court’s feelings and explain constitutional implications of a deviation from the court’s orders.

During the proceedings, the AGP informed the bench that he met the PM and explained to him the contents of the court’s July 27 order as well as the intrinsic constitutional and other legal provisions. He told the court that the PM has asked him that he would hold another meeting with him (AGP) for his response, and therefore, the PM had requested for granting time till Monday for submitting his response. But the bench refused PM’s request and stated it was not possible to constitute a larger bench continuously for weeks because judges have to attend the court sessions at Branch Registries for taking up general public cases.

The Chief Justice said: “We don’t doubt the good intention of the government but dilly-dally on the issue is not good omen.” The CJP said there is no problem for the bench to pass an order. But the attorney general remarked that the prime minister was not thinking on that lines which the court construed. The chief justice said that Haj scam has brought disrepute to the country internationally. “We are well aware of our constitutional limitations.” But when the employees are sacked, they approach the court for justice. The case was not about a bureaucrat but the rule of law and upholding the constitution, he added. He said it is settled law that after an apex court ruling there is no need of permission from the competent authority. When someone decides that he has to follow the constitution, the implementation of the order is just one-minute delay.

Earlier, the attorney general and FIA officials also informed the court that the FIA officer Hussain Asghar could not be contacted. DG FIA Tehsin Anwer informed the court that IG Gilgit-Baltistan office said that Hussain Asghar has left for Islamabad, while DIG Headquarters said he was in Skardu. He said on oath that there was no pressure on him regarding Hussain Asghar and all his phone numbers are switched off. Efforts are on to contact him at Skardu rest house through wireless, he added. The chief justice said the government is playing hide and seek regarding the Hussain Asghar issue. “How strange it is that an officer of IG level could not be contacted,” the CJP wondered. Justice Arif Hassan remarked it was strange that such a high official could not be contacted, and all the agencies including FIA were looking for him. The court adjourned the hearing till today (Friday).

Reko Diq: Supreme Court orders Balochistan to take decisions transparently

The Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday dismissed stay order on mineral exploration in Reko Dig and handed over the matter to the Balochistan government to decide about the leasing of mining of copper and gold reserves at Reko Diq. According to media reports, the parties accepted the court's suggestion during hearing of the Reko Dig case by a Supreme Court bench headed by the Chief Justice. The court directed the government of Balochistan to take decision over the bid of Tethyan Copper Company soon in a transparent manner. The court also said that the pleas would remain in pending till solution of the matter. The court directed the provincial government to settle the matter in view of the rules 2002.

A three-member bench was hearing constitutional petitions filed by Muhammad Tariq Asad, Barrister Zafarullah from Watan Party, Maulana Abdul Haque Baloch and others against the federal government through Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources secretary and government of Balochistan through secretary industries and others against leasing out of gold and copper mines in Balochistan to the foreign exploration and mining companies. The Reko Diq Gold and Copper project, located in Chaghai district of Balochistan, was being developed by TCCP who fraudulently sold mining rights to the Zionist Barrick Gold Corporation, Canada, and Antofagasta, Chile for just $100. The court adjourned the case for indefinite period.

China unaware of Gwadar Port Proposal

China’s foreign ministry said Tuesday it was unaware of a request by Pakistan to Beijing for help in building a naval base at Gwadar, strategically located on the Arabian Sea. Pakistan's stooge Defence Minister Ahmad Mukhtar, who accompanied the stooge Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on a visit to China last week, falsely claimed on Saturday the proposal had been made during the trip, which highlighted the neighbours’ close ties.

“I haven’t heard of this project. As far as I know this subject was not brought up during the visit last week” by Gilani, Chinese foreign ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu told reporters. “China and Pakistan are friendly neighbours and engage in extensive cooperation across the board. Over the years, China has provided assistance to Pakistan within our capacity,” she added.

Interview with Former DG ISI General (r) Hameed Gul on current situation of Pakistan

Former ISI chief General (r) Hameed Gul says Pakistan will not have to face any kind of negative consequences in case it refuses to release Raymond Davis, the killer of two innocent Pakistanis, despite growing USZ pressure. In an interview to the media, he said even isolation of Pakistan in the comity of nations would be a blessing in disguise and the Islamic Republic would emerge as a stronger country, just like China and Russia had done in such a situation. He said if tiny countries like Cuba and North Korea could withstand pressures, there was no reason why Pakistan could not do so. Answering a question, the former ISI chief said the establishment knew well what the government was doing. However, it was deliberately keeping silent because in the past it was branded as a spoiler. In his opinion the government’s decision to call a round table conference on the issue of Raymond Davis amounted to shirking its responsibility. He said the rulers wanted to share the burden with all parties, which is dishonesty.

Here is what he said in his interview to the media:

Q: In your assessment what can the consequences in case Pakistan refuses to release Raymond Davis, as being demanded by the US?

Ans: Nothing! They can’t afford to abandon Pakistan if it stands up to them in full length, because their lines of communications go from Pakistan to Afghanistan. The NATO is already face-to-face with defeat in the battlefield. It will be a disaster for them if the vulnerable lines of communications are choked. I think they will do nothing. But my inner wish is that they should break up ties with Pakistan so that we can breathe freely. Let there be no doubt that Pakistan has all the wherewithal to survive as a free and honourable state. If we are isolated, it will be good for us. Let me remind you that there was a time when China was isolated at international level. Then Russia faced a similar situation during the days of Iron Curtain and became a world power. Tiny Cuba survived the USZ sanctions. North Korea is doing well despite food and fuel shortages. I’ll also like to take you back to Islamic history. It was because of the isolation of the state of Medina that Islam flourished. Had Medina not been attacked and isolated, there would have been no Islam today. What I mean to say is isolation sometimes is a blessing in disguise. Maybe, this is what is needed by Pakistan to move forward.

Q: It is generally believed that the army doesn’t keep silent if a government works against the national interests or is involved in corruption. But despite the fact that countless corruption stories of the present rulers have been published by the media, the powers that be seem to have turned a blind eye. As a former ISI chief, will you like to say whether the perception about the government is wrong or the establishment is not discharging its obligations?

Ans: The establishment has taken a deliberate decision of not interfering in government’s matters. This is a conscious decision, because the establishment is already labeled as spoilers of “demoncrazy”. That’s why they are allowing them to carry on. In fact, the opposition is not playing its role. There is a certain deal of anxiety in the establishment. You remember when the issue of Kerry Lugar Bill was under discussion, the army had given its point of view on the subject (which was totally different from the thinking of the government). Then when the ISI was going to be given under the control of the Interior Ministry, a soft check was applied (as a result of which the decision was reversed). Then everybody knows how eager the government was to get closer to India. The establishment thinks that India is Pakistan’s enemy Number 1. The government was also ready to launch an operation in North Waziristan Agency to please the United States of Zionism. But the establishment stood in the way. It is the duty of the establishment to take steps to safeguard the country’s long-term interests. The governments come and go. They have their agendas. But the establishment has no populist agenda, it has to watch national interests in all situations. This role of the army is as true for Pakistan as Pentagon’s for the United States of Zionism. If political parties have some long-term objectives, they should mention their programs in their election manifestos. If they want a compromise on Kashmir, they should mention it in their manifestos. But unfortunately, political parties after coming to power succumb to USZ pressure, although what they say in public seems very close to people’s sentiments. WikiLeaks had revealed recently that when the parliament passed a resolution against the unabated drone attacks, the prime minister deemed it fit to tell the USZ ambassador that they were free to continue to attacks the targets while the government would go for a (mock) protest. Then the president was quoted as saying that he did not care for the collateral damage in these attacks. This is tantamount to cheating on sentiment of the people as well as parliament. If this is demoncrazy, what is dictatorship?

Q: Politicians say that people can judge their performance better. They argue that if voters of a leader are not satisfied with his performance or are of the view that he is corrupt, they will reject them in elections. Is accountability by voters sufficient in a country like ours where nobody would mind being rejected by people after he has accumulated enough money through corrupt practices?

Ans: This is a diabolically nonsensical notion that electoral mandate is actually the ownership right. It is only a temporary letter of appointment. You are judged on the basis of your performance. If you did not measure up to people’s expectations, then you lose the moral mandate. People have the right to cancel the letter of appointment of all such people.

Q: At a time when all parties have representation in parliament, the government plans to hold a Round Table Conference. Do you think the initiative will serve any useful purpose?

Ans: I think the proposed RTC is being held only on the issue of Raymond Davis, the USZ national who killed two innocent Pakistanis. Instead of discharging its duty by taking any decision on the issue of his immunity, it is shirking its responsibility. They want the burden shared by everybody. This is dishonesty – to say the least. I don’t approve of the RTC in this case, because if the RTC says “yes” to the immunity issue, the entire leadership will stand discredited. And this is not good for demoncrazy.

Q: The Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces – the President – once said that India poses no threat to Pakistan. However, the thinking of the Armed Forces is totally different. In your opinion, how is possible for the Armed Forces to work with such a supreme commander?

Ans: Let me tell you very frankly that the entire nation is with the Army. There is a long history of Indian hostility towards Pakistan. You know the Kashmir issue has not been settled so far; water dispute is also there; Siachen is also like a battleground. India’s military leadership has now come up with a new doctrine against Pakistan. India also continues to backstab Pakistan through Afghanistan; efforts are also continuing to destabilize Pakistan through terrorist activities. India, Israhell and the United States of Zionism also want to denuclearize Pakistan.

Q: Terrorist activities are being carried out in almost all parts of the country. In some incidents even the military troops were killed. Who in your opinion is behind these activities? Do the growing terrorist activities not reflect the failure of our intelligence agencies?

Ans: Yes, I agree that it’s the failure of our institutions. But no one should forget that it’s very difficult to prevent a determined terrorist or a suicide bomber from reaching his target. Such failures have not been seen in Pakistan alone. You take the example of USZ, UK and many other countries. Terrorist activities could not be prevented even in these countries. Pakistan is in the eye of a storm. Such failures don’t reflect inefficiency of the institutions because many powerful forces are working against Pakistan’s security. As if drone attacks were not sufficient, now “Raymond Davis attacks” are also being carried out. How many people are involved in these attacks, nobody can say at this stage. But I have no doubt that there are people who are out to portray Pakistan as a failed state, not capable of keeping nuclear arsenals. This is the image of Pakistan they want to portray. It’s a monumental conspiracy against the state and people of Pakistan.

Q: Thousands of Blackwater operatives are reportedly active in various parts of the country. Some newspapers even published the addresses of the houses these operatives are living in. But the Armed Forces have not taken any step against these people. What does this mean?

Ans: In fact, we are experiencing a Camp David-like situation that Egypt had to face after signing the accord with Israhell in 1979. Pakistan’s Camp David was ‘signed’ by former president and prime minister Pervez Musharraf and Shaukat Aziz. It is the ghost of Camp David that is responsible for all our sufferings. I feel the USZ forces have been allowed to carry out operations as they wish – in utter disregard of Pakistan’s laws. This is all because of the NRO. The facts behind the NRO- midwifed by USZ and UK- must be exposed.

Q: Drone attacks on tribal areas are continuing and the government has stopped even condemning them or lodging a protest, no matter how many casualties. What should be done to stop these attacks?

Ans: Drone attacks are part of an invisible war against Pakistan. If drone attacks are abrasive to tribal traditions which arouse people to take revenge, the attacks carried out by people like Raymond Davis and mercenaries are part of efforts to denuclearize Pakistan and cast it into image of a terrorist state. The enemies want to cut Pakistan to size and also denuclearize it. As for the government’s inability to have them halted, you must bear in mind that policies in Pakistan are being framed under the shadow of the National Reconciliation Ordinance. These agreements continue to haunt both the political scene and security template of Pakistan.

Q: The USZ has destroyed Afghanistan and Iraq. Its policy towards many Islamic countries is also adversarial. Why is it so?

Ans: It’s all because of the overriding security concerns of Israhell – which is an illegitimate state with a very short shelf life. Unless it is fully supported by West, led by the USZ, it can’t survive. Israhell wants the USZ and the West to deal with any threat to the Jewish state. The USZ also wants to grab all energy resources lying in this region. In fact, 70% of the energy resources are in the Islamic world. The USZ also wants to contain China as a giant military power.

The Tunisian army has taken control of the North African nation after President Zine El Abidin Ben Ali reportedly left the country over increasing public discontent. Ben Ali left the country for Malta on Friday shortly after sacking his cabinet members and commissioning Prime Minister Mohammed Ghannouchi to form a new government. Sources close to the government say members of the Ben Ali family have been arrested. Prime Minister Ghannouchi announced, in a televised address, that he was taking over the immediate responsibility to run the country.
 

"Since the president is temporarily unable to exercise his duties, it has been decided that the prime minister will exercise temporarily the (presidential) duties," Ghannouchi said on state television.

Tunisian military units have surrounded the international airport on the outskirts of the capital city. Earlier on Friday, Ben Ali declared a national state of emergency as anti-government protests across Tunisia reached a breaking point. Public gatherings have been banned in Tunis and security forces have been authorized to fire on anyone refusing to obey orders. A dusk-till-dawn curfew has also been imposed. Tunisians, who have been demanding Ben Ali to resign for being a no good zionist puppet that he is, are furious about the police killing 13 more people last night -- especially after the president promised to end the use of live rounds on protesters.
