Pakistan and China have jointly won a coveted Award in Zhuhai for the close cooperation in the promotion of Aviation Industry, a day before start of the bi-annual International Air show.

The “Airspace Laureate 2012 Awards” was jointly received by Chief Project Director of JF-17 Program Air Vice-Marshal Javed Ahmed, who is in Zhuhai with Pakistan Air Force contingent taking part in the international air show and from Chinese side Mr.Li Pei, Chief Project Director of China National Aero-Technology Import and Export Corporation (CATIC) in the presence of a large number of guests.

"This is a big achievement and acknowledgement for Pakistan and China for cooperation in their joint effort for the promotion of aviation industry”, remarked Group Captain Tariq Mahmod, Director Media, Pakistan Air Force whiletalking to APP.

PAF successfully helps Japanese Tourists in airlifting from Gilgit

The Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan, Mr. Hiroshi Oe, presented Tuesday an Award of Excellence to the seventeen- member team of Pakistan Air Force (PAF) for the successful emergency transportation of the 77 Japanese tourists from Gilgit to Chaklala Air Base on the 8th of April, 2012.


On request from the Japanese Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan Air Force (PAF) within no time dispatched a military aircraft to airlift 77 Japanese tourists including some other foreigners from a northern region where sectarian violence had left them stranded in April this year.


Eulogizing the meritorious service by the PAF, Ambassador Oe said that the government and the people of Japan highly valued this effort rendered by the 17-member team of Pakistan Air Force which successfully transported Japanese tourists from Gilgit to Islamabad despite short time and an inclement weather. “This award is the recognition of your great services for the Japanese tourists who had been in need of emergency help at that time,” said the Japanese Ambassador.


The Ambassador said that the Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda and Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba had extended their profound appreciation to the visiting Pakistani Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar when they met in Tokyo recently for extending this valuable support.


While appreciating the resolve of the crew members of C-130 and the ground staff, Ambassador Oe said that without this firm resolve of the crew members, the operation would not have succeeded as the weather conditions for the next few days did not allow flight operation in the area.


Highlighting the military cooperation between Japan and Pakistan, the Ambassador said that the two countries had extended great help to each other in time of natural calamities like Great East Japan Earthquake, the earthquake of 2005 in Pakistan, and the flood of 2010. Ambassador Hiroshi Oe expressed his resolve to continue to work towards further strengthening cooperative relations between the military of the two countries.

A tribute to the Son of Pak Sarzameen - Cecil Chaudhry

Cecil Chaudhry (May his soul rest in peace) was a heroic Jawaan of Pak Air Force who safeguarded and served this land on the basis of sheer love for Pak Sarzameen. Despite belonging to the minority, he proved his love for Pakistan by heroically contributing to the 1965 and 1971 wars against the hostile enemy. The national hero aslo participated in PAF battles against Israel in 1967. Pakistan today is proud of her son, irrespective of the color, cast or creed when his soul rests in peace, having given his duty to the Pak Sarzameen with all his sincerity and devotion. The great son of PakSarzameen truly trusted and believed to what the founding Father - Quaid-e-Azam said at the creation of Pakistan:   

We are starting with the fundamental principle that we are all citizens and equal citizens of one state. No matter what is his colour, caste or creed is first, second and last a citizen of this state with equal rights, privileges and obligations..

Chaudhry was schooled at St Anthony’s High School and was an alumnus of the Forman Christian College. He joined the Pakistan Air Force Academy in 1958, where he studied aeronautics and mechanical engineering. It was as a pilot that Chaudhry developed his legacy as national hero for several flight missions including the 1965 and 1971 wars for which he received a Sitara-e-Jurat and Tamgha-e-Jurat.


He served as the principal of St Anthony’s High School in Lahore and St Mary’s Academy Lalazar, Rawalpindi. “He struggled for the rights of minorities and women,” said retired Brigadier-General Samson Simon Sharaf, who was close to Chaudhry and present at the hospital. “He was a great fan of Quaid-e-Azam’s ideals and was critical of the Objectives Resolution [of 1949].”

*Cecil Chaudhry, the son of Faustian Elmer Chaudhry, the famous Chief Photographer of Pakistan Times, Lahore, was born in 1941. His interest in aircraft and flying brought him to the PAF and he graduated in 1960. He soon established himself professionally and in 1965 was working as Flight Commander (Training) under the renowned Squadron Leader Sarfraz Rafiqui. When war broke out on 6 September, 1965, Cecil busied himself flying numerous Close Support missions to ward off the Indian ground attack against Lahore and Sialkot. He was detailed to fly a dusk strike mission against Halwara under the command of Squadron Leader Rafiqui. 


There were unavoidable delays in their take-off and Halwara got forewarned because of the successful PAF strike against Pathankot. When Rafiqui, Yunus and Cecil reached their target Halwara, they were intercepted by numerous Hunter aircraft of the Indian Air Force. During the engagement, after shooting down one Indian Hunter, Rafiqui’s guns jammed and he handed over the lead to Cecil. The three fought bravely against heavy odds but Rafiqui and Yunus were shot down while Cecil managed to return safely after shooting down a Hunter. The loss of his mentor Rafiqui and friend Yunus enraged Cecil and he fought the rest of the war aggressively and with determination. For his acts of courage, dedication and professional ability, Cecil received the Sitara-i-Jurat.


During the 1971 war also Cecil, by now a Squadron Leader, fought with valour. On 7 December, during his second mission of the day over Zafarwal-Shakargarh sector, Cecil’s aircraft was hit by ground fire and badly damaged. He had to eject in enemy territory but he managed to make good his escape and reached Sargodha base safely. He continued to fight valiantly despite fractured ribs and exacted his revenue on 11 December, when he managed to shoot down an Indian SU-7 fighter right over the area where he had lost his aircraft.


During the course of his service, Cecil commanded the prestigious No 9 Squadron and the Combat Commander’s School PAF. He retired in 1986 in the rank of Group Captain. Not one to sit idle, he took time to educate himself and subsequently became the Principal at St. Anthony’s School at Lahore. He continues to turn out scores of motivated young men who are bubbling with zeal and enthusiasm to serve their country with dedication, pride and honour.


Squadron Leader William Desmond Harney, a Navigator of exceptional courage and dedication to duty needs special mention. Born in Chittagong in 1937, after receiving his early schooling at St. Placids, W.D. Harney joined PAF Academy in 1957 and graduated in 1960.


In 1965, when war broke out, W.D. Harney was posted as Navigator in a Bomber Squadron. During the war, inspite of a hand injury, he voluntarily undertook 14 bombing missions and especially the most hazardous ones to Adampur, Halwara, Jodhpur, Pathankot and Ambala. In all the missions, he excelled in leadership, courage and devotion to duty. His mission-planning and execution of the missions was so meticulous that despite heavy odds, he always reached his targets and contributed significantly to the accuracy of the attacks. For his display of extreme courage and professionalism, W.D. Harney was awarded the Sitara-i-Jurat.


Squadron Leader W.D. Harney participated wholeheartedly in the 1971 war also and undertook a number of daring missions. He retired in 1974 and decided to settle in Australia where he had gone to attend to his ailing father.* [1]

Pakistan receives 3 more F-16 Fighters under the 2005 deal with Lockheed Martin

F-16 Fighter Aircraft

Pakistan Air Force (PAF) on Monday received three more F-16 fighter jets from United Sates of Zionism. A PAF spokesman said that Pakistan Air Force received three F-16 fighter jets. He added among the planes, two are upgraded F-16 while the other is latest Block-52. The three aircrafts are part of the final batch of 18 F-16 block 52 aircraft from Lockheed Martin as part of a foreign military sale (FMS) of 36 F-16C/D block 50/52 aircraft announced in June 2005. Under the USZ-Pakistan F-16 programme, Lockheed was awarded a contract for 12 F-16C and six F-16D block 52 aircraft in December 2006. The delivery comes at a time when military aid for Pakistan has been almost completely halted by the USZ in the wake of a series of crises affecting the bilateral relationship between the two nations.


Pakistan has already received block 52 versions of the F-16 aircraft, which includes day-night, all-weather and precision-attack capabilities. The compact multirole, single-engine Lockheed Martin-built F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft has a high level of manoeuvrability, a top speed of 2,124km/h, and can detect planes flying at very low altitudes. The F-16 block 52 aircraft provides additional fuel and payload capacity, improved avionics and sensors, and colour cockpit displays with enhanced pilot/vehicle interfaces. The USZ is also working with the PAF to update 45 F-16s from its existing fighter fleet through the USZ foreign military financing security assistance programme. The aircraft are currently undergoing mid-life upgrades and deliveries are scheduled to take place throughout 2012 and 2013.

Propaganda against Army, ISI is Treason: Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW)

President PEW Dr. Murtaza Mughal, Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Monday said that country is passing through a critical stage and propaganda against armed forces and ISI at this critical juncture amounts to treason. According to press release issued here on Monday, Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW said that we reject deadly propaganda against armed forces and ISI which is a conspiracy to brainwash common people to create a rift between masses and the national security institutions. Every Pakistani condemns the unholy moves to discredit the guardians of ideological and geographical borders, he said while speaking at Bedari Fikr Forum.

All patriotic Pakistanis should give a strong message that whole nation stands by army; he said adding that adversaries are cultivating doubts aimed at weakening the country. Dr. Murtaza Mughal called upon the masses not to succumb to the propaganda and reject the scenario painted by international media, think tanks, research institutes, intellectuals and paid studies that have no worth, he said.

In 1947 and 50s, many politicians and intellectuals had described Pakistan as an economically, geographically, politically, and culturally unviable state ; they are all dead now but the country is still on the map, he said. He said that a dozen countries have initiated their proxy wars in Pakistan therefore we should support institutions that are fighting for our survival. Armed forces and ISI commits mistakes, sometimes very serious, but these issues should not be used to demoralize them as it will hurt supreme national interests. They can be hold accountable once situation returns to calm. Giving examples of many recent incidents he said that all seems to be part of a conspiracy to defame national institutions of vital importance. Spy agencies of enemy nations have been engaged since long in violent subversive activities to create social and political unrest in Pakistan but they have achieved nothing. No doubt that country is passing through difficult times but the adverse propaganda against Pakistan’s Army and wrong conclusions about Pakistan’s future that is creating frustration and low morale must come to a halt, he said.

Pakistani F-16s beat RAF Eurofighter Typhoons in Turkey

Pakistani pilots flying modernized versions of the 1970s-vintage F-16 Falcon fighter have beaten the RAF's brand-new Eurofighter Typhoon superfighters during air combat exercises in Turkey, according to a Pakistani officer.

This interview with an unnamed but evidently experienced Pakistani Air Force (PAF) F-16 pilot on exchange with the Turkish air force, posted on the official site of the PAF display team, includes the following intriguing passage. (Hat tip to the excellent DEW Line blog for flagging this up.)

Q: Any memorable experiences that you would like to share?A: On one occasion – in one of the international Anatolian Eagles - PAF pilots were pitted against RAF Typhoons, a formidable aircraft. There were three set-ups and in all three, we shot down the Typhoons. The RAF pilots were shocked.

Q: Any particular reason for your success?
A: NATO pilots are not that proficient in close-in air-to-air combat. They are trained for BVR [Beyond Visual Range] engagements and their tactics are based on BVR engagements. These were close-in air combat exercises and we had the upper hand because close-in air combat is drilled into every PAF pilot and this is something we are very good at.

The Anatolian Eagle air-combat exercises are hosted by the Turkish air force and would have seen Pakistani pilots on exchange with the Turks flying modernised Turkish "Block 50" F-16s, a much-upgraded version of the original US made 1970s Fighting Falcon, which is now in service with many air forces and assembled under licence in various countries including Turkey.

Air Force launches radars nap probe

The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has constituted a special committee to probe into the unilateral Abbottabad operation carried out by USZ forces, involving top-secret Stealth helicopters, to wage a pre-planned fake OBL circus, according to reports. It is the first committee constituted by Pakistan since the operation to investigate the OBL circus and to particularly find facts behind the USZ helicopters entering in and out of the Pakistani territory without causing an alert. Chief of Air Staff Rao Qamar Suleman formed the committee to probe the undetected entrance of USZ helicopters in and out of the Pakistani territory, said the BBC report. The Abbottabad operation was conducted on May 2 by USZ Navy SEALs in which the most wanted bin Laden was reportedly killed. But after the operation, there arouse many a question, the most haunting was about Pakistani officials’ inability to detect USZ helicopters.

The PAF committee headed by a Group Captain has started investigation in this regard and has questioned the officers concerned on duty on that fateful night. It is said that more committees of the like would be set up in Defence and Intelligence wings to reveal facts of the episode. According to initial findings of the committee, it is revealed that radars fixed in Peshawar and Risalpur to monitor Western borders were functioning properly on that night. The radars had noticed a movement in the space near Jalalabad in Afghanistan at 11pm. It was a movement of six planes that took off from Jalalabad and kept moving near the Pak-Afghan border, but no copter entered into Pakistani territory, said the report. One of the planes was fitted with AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System), while the remaining were F-18 fighter jets. “Pakistani forces kept an eye but none of these planes ever crossed into Pakistan on the radar at any stage”, the initial findings report said.

The investigators are trying to determine whether the six planes were flown up to the Pakistani border to divert attention of the authorities from the stealth mission in Abbottabad, said the report. The PAF investigating committee is trying to figure out why the radars couldn’t locate the helicopters towards Abbottabad if they had located the movement of planes, especially after the early movement of the planes being on the radar. Another question that is being raised is, how the USZ stealth copters that were smaller in size and different in dimensions, as determined from the one that crashed on the site, managed to fly out of the Pakistani airspace of approximately 250 kilometres without having the need for refuelling in view of their limited storage capacity.

PAF ready to tackle aggression - Chief of Air Staff

Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman has made it clear that Pakistan Air Force (PAF) is ready to tackle external and internal threats, being faced by the country. “We are aware of confronting internal and external threats but we have to tackle them through modern war strategy and limited resources”, Rao said while addressing the graduation ceremony held at Pakistan Air Force Academy here in Risalpur as chief guest. The successful operation against (CIA backed) extremists is ample evidence that country’s armed forces are ready to meet any challenge, he said. Pakistan, he said, does not wish to enter into arms race. Pakistan is a peace-loving country and wants to live in the region, with honour and dignity. Aggression of any kind from any side would be met with full force by the armed forces of Pakistan, he said.

PAF remains a potent force, fully capable of defending the aerial frontiers of Pakistan, he said. We will continue to equip air force with modern weapons, he said. We would make the country’s future secure and safe, Rao Qamar added. “No doubt weapons are necessary in war but the strong institution, strong training and spirits are more necessary in war”, he said. Later, Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Rao Qamar Suleman distributed Prizes among cadets. Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee’s Trophy for Best Performance was awarded to Pilot Officer Rana Ahsan. Chief of the Air Staff’s Trophy was awarded to Pilot Officer Tallah. The coveted Sword of Honor was awarded to Pilot Officer Zeshan Anjum while Pilot Officer Kamran Zia lifted Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee’s Trophy. Air Staff’s Trophy for best Performance in Engineering Discipline was awarded to Pilot Officer Mohammad Adnan Khan.

Turkey upgrading PAF F-16s

In a very positive strategic move, Pakistan Air Force (PAF) has opted for Turkish Aerospace Industrial Complex "TAI" for the Mid Life Upgrade (MLU) of its F-16A/B aircraft fleet in a bid to enhance its operational capability. Pakistan and Turkey signed an agreement in this regard last week and the multimillion dollars project would begin soon. Pakistan has opted for "TAI" - the Ankara-based Turkish aerospace industrial complex - also for the cost-effectiveness since its lengthy negotiations with the USZ manufacturers failed to bear fruits. The USZ manufacturers of the F-16 aircraft were very expensive. And also keeping in mind the lack of mutual trust between the two countries, Pakistan had to opt for Turkey.

Under the agreement the project, that was expected to kick-start within next two months or so, would be executed in phases. The PAF, which currently has more than 40 F-16 A/B multi-roller fighter fleet, would soon start sending its F-16 aircraft to Turkey for the MLU. TAI, established in 1984, is a joint venture of various Turkish companies and had successfully realised the co-production of F-16 fighters, CN-235 light transport/maritime patrol/surveillance aircraft, SF-260 trainers, Cougar AS-532 general purpose helicopters. With its proven experience and know-how, TAI has improved its capabilities in the fields of design, production, modernisation, modification and systems integration of fixed and rotary wing air platforms, unmanned aerial vehicles and satellite.Because of the high quality stringent standards including the NATO AQAP-2110, ISO-9001: 2000 and AS EN 9100, TAI has won position of a qualified supplier for Aermacchi, Agusta Westland, Airbus, Boeing, EADS CASA, Eurocopter, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, MDHI, Sikorsky and many more.

This development has immense khair associated to it since this is the first time when two brother Muslim nations as close to each other as Pakistan and Turkey, have started upgrading the aircrafts of each other. Don't forget that Turkey has already shown keen interest in buying Pakistan's JF-17 Thunder aircrafts.

PAF in Aviation & Aerospace Exhibition, Beijing (China) for the first time

InshAllah Pakistan Air Force (PAF) is going to participate for the first time in an international aviation and aerospace exhibition being held in China next month.

Beijing: While Addressing a press conference to brief about the salient features of the 8th China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition to be held in Zhuhai (Guangdong province), the Deputy Secretary General of the provincial government and the member of the standing Committee of the air show, Lin Ying along with other senior officials said that an acrobatic team of Pakistan Air Force “(Sherdils) شیر دِل” will demonstrate their acrobatic skill at the Air show.

He said that besides performance of "(Sherdils) شیر دِل ", the Pak-China jointly produced fighter aircraft JF-17 also known as “Thunder” fighter will also participate in exhibition in which world famous aircraft manufacturers including Boeing, Airbus, Rolls-Royce and Rosoboron besides Chinese manufacturers would also showcase their products.

The Air and Technical officials at Pakistan Embassy attended the press conference. In an informal talk with the Vice-Mayor Chen Ying, the Air official said that PAF is ensuring maximum participation in the Air show and Chief of Air Staff of Pakistan Air Force will be attending the ceremony in Zhuhai.

This is for the first time, that China made K-8 aircraft and JF-17 Thunder fighter, a co-production of Pakistan and China will be the flying in the Air show besides Chinese J-10 Fighter Aircraft, he said.

The Vice-Mayor Chen Ying said on the occasion that he was extremely happy to say that PAF is taking part in the exhibition in a big way. “This demonstrates Pak-China strong friendship in all dimensions”, he said further.
