The Insane West: Say hello to Genetic Surveillance

Print Friendly and PDF

With websites, corporations, and governments peeking at our activities both on and offline, many of us have become more mindful of the electronic footprints our online activities leave behind. But there aren't any privacy settings to deter the kind of surveillance that information artist Heather Dewey-Hagborg is modeling with her new project: a genetic intelligence database of computer-generated 3D profiles constructed from found hair samples.

Premiering last weekend at an open studio showcase for residents of New York City's Eyebeam art and technology lab, the project, Stranger Visions, began with a simple but profound realization: we are leaving physical traces of ourselves everywhere, and tools to unlock the secrets behind those traces will soon become more accessible than ever before.

Dewey-Hagborg says it was a single strand of hair lodged precariously between the glass frame of a painting that got her to thinking about the origins of this ubiquitous human detritus. "I had never considered the emerging possibility of genetic surveillance," she says. "That the very things that make us human: hair, skin, saliva, become a liability as we constantly face the possibility of shedding these traces in public space, leaving artifacts which anyone could come along and mine for information." She points me to a story about a geneticist whose attempts to determine the origin of a murderer from a semen sample caused the Dutch government to pass new regulations on DNA phenotyping in 2003. "It was part of my early research and I think that the issues that article raises are integral to the piece." Today, the Netherlands remains the only country to have explicitly restricted such practices.

The premise might bring to mind the fictional dystopia depicted in Andrew Niccol's 1997 sci-fi film, Gattaca. But Stranger Visions isn't a tribute — it's an actual proof-of-concept. Collaborating with Genspace, a DIY bio lab and hackerspace in Brooklyn, Dewey-Hagborg found herself in the role of an amateur gene sleuth, aiming to make the genetic forensics equivalent of police sketches. Collecting hair samples from bathroom stalls and other public spaces, she extracts known predictive traits from the sequenced genome — race, resistance to diseases, eye color, etc. — eventually using the results to chart ancestry across a large printed map and generate 3D portraits of her unwitting, anonymous subjects.

Dewey-Hagborg's own genetic self-portrait, fabricated into a physical likeness, proves the procedure to be eerily accurate. As for the rest of us, expensive gene sequencing equipment is still preventing mass-adoption of the practice, but it won't be for long: recent developments suggest the costs of sequencing the genome will soon fall below the $1,000 range. For now, a table of petri dishes containing human hairs, with a monitor above displaying computer approximations of their owners, serves as a powerful and chilling demonstration of the bioethical minefield that may very well await us.

Stranger Visions is on display all this month, along with many other open studios projects, at the Eyebeam technology center in Manhattan. The exhibits are free, but you can show your support by donating to Eyebeam's Kickstarter campaign, which ends today.

Highest Child Poverty rate reported in USZ

Print Friendly and PDF

Recent studies suggest that the United States of Zionism has the highest child poverty rate in the world, affecting the performance of hundreds of thousands of children in school.

According to a report from the National Center on Family Homelessness, child poverty has been estimated to be at 22 percent, the highest rate in the world.

The report goes on to say that at some point during 2010, 1.6 million children in the US were homeless.

Poor academic achievement and poverty have been linked, indicating that children living in poverty often have a hard time concentrating on their studies.

“They're [students] going to be struggling with lack of food and nutrition, healthcare, dentalcare. You add those barriers up and you can see a child with those challenges walking into a classroom, and would any of us doubt his/her [dealing with the challenges of ] focusing on what is going on in the classroom,” DC Kids' HyeSook Chung says.

The report predicts a rise in the country's child poverty, as the rate continues to rise.

According to experts, even if changes were made to improve the situation, it would take up to a decade to remove the gap between poor children and their more privileged classmates.

GOP to Obama: Avert national bankruptcy

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels delivers the Republican
response to President Barack Obama's State of the
Union address in Washington, Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012

In response to President Barack Obama's Zionist State of the Union address, Republicans have accused the president of pursuing extremist policies, calling on the White House to ward off a national bankruptcy in 2012.

Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels, representing the Republican Party, delivered the pointed and pugnacious response in Washington on Tuesday night.

“The extremism that stifles the development of homegrown energy, or cancels a perfectly safe pipeline that would employ tens of thousands, or jacks up consumer utility bills for no improvement in either human health or world temperature, is a pro-poverty policy,” Daniels said referring to Obama's decision to halt work on a proposed oil pipeline from western Canada to Texas' Gulf Coast.

In his Zionist State of the Union address on Tuesday, Obama claimed that the Republican members of the Congress were an obstacle to the USZ economic progress.

"It's not fair and it's not true for the president to attack Republicans in Congress as obstacles on these questions. They and they alone have passed bills to reduce borrowing, reform entitlements and encourage new job creation, only to be shot down time and time again by the president and his Democratic Senate allies,” Daniels said noted.

He went on to say that 2012 should be the year Washington proves its critics wrong and strives to “avert national bankruptcy.”

“In our economic stagnation and indebtedness, we are only a short distance behind Greece, Spain, and other European countries now facing economic catastrophe,” Daniels pointed out.

In 2011, the USZ high national debt cost it its top triple-A credit rating which was lowered by Standard & Poor's rating agency.

Currently, the USZ national debt stands at 15 trillion dollars, which means nearly 50,000 dollars of debt for every American citizen.

Future of Pakistan & America as Men of Allah see

    Print Friendly and PDF

Once a person asked Wasif Ali Wasif r.a, "At the present age, the radio, the press and the entire media have an extreme influence of the West and the East.. In this way, the country is getting weakened?!"
Wasif Ali Wasif r.a., answered him:

It is not about the influence of such things being absorbed in an individual. What I am talking is about the fate. It's not that the nations are made or destroyed by radio, television or the media.  Neither the press or the television or the radio NOR even Democracy have ever made a nation! Who Has made the country, until He does not plan to break it, NO ONE can do so. This country will prosper by the grace of Allah Almighty. This country has the blood of thousands of martyrs in her soil. Tens of thousands of martyrs' blood is present in the building of this country. Now you please leave the radio (media) if it even says that the country is falling apart. If the media has the influence of the West or America, or India or even if it has the influence of Russia,  if all of them want to break the country and if they all come altogether to break the country apart, they still can not break it!

This thought of yours goes towards negativity. Instead you should say that how can Pakistan break unless and until we are alive! Doesn't matter even if it has America's influence, India's influence, china's influence and so on.. And if there's some one to sacrifice his life on the sacred land for Allah's sake, so either he will save the country or either he will save his own life. This is only to be felt, you say that it happens as the media wants, it happens like what America wants. Who is America? What is America?! America is herself about to drown in the water, she herself is in trouble. The life in America is no life. There are so much more troubles and difficulties, and there are so many incidents to be destroyed. Men of Allah who have a foresight tell that the water level there is going to rise. What will the media do?
