Sources: Syrian Rebels Training On Anti-Aircraft Weapons In Jordan

Print Friendly and PDF

The U.S. has now formally recognized a new Syrian opposition group as the legitimate representative of the Syrian people. But the U.S. has repeatedly declined to provide weapons for rebels fighting President Bashar Assad's army. However, NPR has learned that there are movements behind the scenes. In Jordan, several Syrian sources said that Jordanian authorities, along with their U.S. and British counterparts, have organized training for Syrian rebels on sophisticated anti-aircraft weapons. The Syrian sources would not identify the weapons or where they came from, but they indicated they were the kind of arms that could have a dramatic impact in the fight against Assad's military.

Since the summer, the Syrian air force has been pounding rebel strongholds with helicopter gunships and fighter jets. Those bombings have killed hundreds, if not thousands, and many of the casualties have been civilians. In recent weeks, the rebels have acquired anti-aircraft weapons from Syrian military arsenals, after capturing key air-defense bases in northern and central Syria. The rebels successfully downed a Russian-made MiG fighter jet late last month. It was the first time the rebels succeeded in assembling and firing an SA-16 shoulder-to-air missile.

Training For The Rebels
One Syrian rebel fighter, who did not want to be named, said he attended a training course in Jordan and that the training was not led by uniformed Western soldiers, but rather by men in plainclothes who spoke several different dialects of Arabic. This suggests the trainers may have been private contractors, who are sometimes used by the U.S. for training and assembly of sophisticated weaponry. The rebel fighter also said members of the Jordanian military attended the training sessions. The source said he and about 25 others took part in the course. He said a handful of rebel groups fighting inside Syria each sent a few men to the training. Another source said hundreds of men have done the training in the past two to three months.

These two sources — along with two other sources (none of whom wanted to be named) — said it was their impression that the sophisticated anti-aircraft weapons are present in Jordan and could be transferred into Syria at any time.
"You have to unite first," a source quoted one American as saying during a training session. The reference is to disparate rebel groups fighting in Syria who don't follow a clear chain of command. "They want us to have structures. It's all about structures," said a second source, a Syrian army officer who defected and comes from a prominent family. This same source said uniformed U.S. military officials regularly meet with Syrian defectors to discuss military planning. He said the current debate centers around whether rebel fighters should first seize the southern Syrian region of Dera'a, just across the border from Jordan, before making a march to the Syrian capital, Damascus, just an hour's drive away.
Another option would be for the rebels to focus all their attention and resources on Damascus, where some rebel groups have already launched an offensive east of the city and on the civilian airport. Several sources said the focus of this military training and advising has been on professional soldiers who defected from the army, rather than civilian fighters who might have a more religious bent. The officer who defected said the U.S. and Jordan hope to avoid what they call the "mess" in northern and eastern Syria, where Islamist fighters like Jabhat al-Nusra have dominated the fight. That group has been designated by the U.S. as a terrorist organization. The U.S. Embassy in Jordan referred questions about this story to the State Department in Washington. Neither the State Department nor the Pentagon responded to requests for comment.

Russia Arms Syria with Hypersonic Iskandar Ballistic Missiles

Print Friendly and PDF

Hours after NATO agreed on Tuesday to send Patriot missiles to Turkey because of the crisis in Syria, Russia delivered its first shipment of Iskander missiles to Syria. The superior Iskander can travel at hypersonic speed of over 1.3 miles per second (Mach 6-7) and has a range of over 280 miles with pinpoint accuracy of destroying targets with its 1,500-pound warhead, a nightmare for any missile defense system.

According to Mashregh, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard media outlet, Russia had warned Turkey not to escalate the situation, but with Turkey’s request for Patriot missiles, it delivered its first shipment of Iskanders to Syria. Reporting today, Mashregh said the handover occurred when Russian naval logistic vessels docked at Tartus in Syria. The Iskandar is a surface-to-surface missile that no missile defense system can trace or destroy, Mashregh said. Russia had earlier threatened that should America put its missile defense system in Poland, it would retaliate by placing its Iskander missiles at Kaliningrad, its Baltic Sea port.

Russia’s delivery of Iskanders to Bashar Assad’s embattled regime clearly shows that the security and stability of Syria remains Russia’s red line, Mashregh said. It is unknown how many of these missiles have been delivered but the numbers given are sufficient to destroy any Patriot missiles in Turkey, it said. The delivery of the missile not only threatens the security of Turkey but also Israhell, which would have to recalculate its strategy with its defensive and offensive capabilities. As reported in a WND exclusive on Dec. 5, Iran’s Islamic regime also sees the toppling of the Assad regime as its red line and has 170 ballistic missiles targeting Tel Aviv in underground missile silos, some with biological warheads.

In August, a commentary in Mashregh, representing the regime’s views, warned America and Israhell that further instability in Syria would spark a pre-emptive attack on Israhell in which the use of weapons of mass destruction – biological, chemical and even nuclear bombs – won’t be off the table. It stated that certain groups (proxies, such as Hezbollah) have been armed with WMDs and that Israhell will be their target. The Mashregh commentary charged that Israhell is one of the conspirators behind the Syrian crisis in order to strategically change the geopolitics of the region and defeat one of the main players in the Islamic world’s “resistance front” (Iran, Syria and Hezbollah). It warned Israhell that with the direction it has chosen, “There is a dead end, and the threat of mass killing awaits.”

The Islamic regime in Iran for its part continues to ship arms to Syria via Iraq both by air and ground while its Quds Forces help the Assad regime in killing its own people. To date, over 40,000 people, including many women and children, have died since the Syrian uprising began in March of 2011. Reports indicate that Assad has decided to use chemical weapons on his own people as a last attempt to save his rule. Speaking in Prague on Monday, USZ Secretary of State Hillary Clinton repeated the Iraq propaganda rhetoric warning Syria that the "use" of chemical weapons would be a red line, indicating that America would retaliate.

Meanwhile, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has ordered the Guards and its Quds Forces to use all of their capabilities to protect Assad and has threatened war against those helping the rebels in Syria, primarily Saudi Arabia and Turkey, according to a source who had served in the Revolutionary Guards intelligence unit but who has since defected. The source added that the recent Gaza conflict was a warning to America and Israhell that the Islamic regime in Iran can destabilize the region further should the push in Syria continue to topple Assad. The region will witness terrorist attacks, assassinations and incitement for uprisings in countries allied with America as the situation in Syria further deteriorates, the regime has promised, according to the source.

Internet back on in Damascus after 2-day Blackout

Print Friendly and PDF

The Internet was working in Syria’s capital of Damascus on Saturday, residents said, after a two-day blackout that experts said was highly likely to have been caused by authorities. Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government has been accused before of cutting Internet and telephone connections to block opposition activists and rebel communications during the 20-month revolt. Authorities had attributed the latest outage to a “terrorist” attack or a technical fault.

Syria Shuts Down Internet nationwide

Print Friendly and PDF

The internet in Syria has been shut off nationwide, say two US based web-monitoring companies. During the 20 months of civil uprising, Syria has gone through partial internet disruption, but a 100 per cent blackout is unprecedented.

US-based network security firm Renesys registered Syria disappearing from the internet at 12:26pm local time (10:26 GMT). “All 84 of Syria's IP address blocks have become unreachable, effectively removing the country from the internet,” reads Renesys’ blogpost. The same was confirmed by Akamai Technologies Inc, another US-based company that distributes content on the internet.

Syrian state TV denied the blackout was nationwide. It said the outage was cause by a technical failure, only affected some provinces and that technicians were trying to fix the problem. The Syrian Information Ministry blamed "terrorists" for the outage, as reported by the broadcaster.

According to Renesys, there are still a few Syrian networks, which belong to Tata Communications, that remain connected to the internet. "These are potentially offshore, rather than domestic, and perhaps not subject to whatever killswitch was thrown today within Syria. These five offshore survivors include the webservers that were implicated in the delivery of malware targeting Syrian activists in May of this year," writes the company.

Activists in Syria reached Thursday by satellite telephone confirmed the unprecedented blackout. They also complained of difficulties with cell and landline telephone connections. Phone disruptions can be tracked by a Renesys diagram.

The Associated Press commented that previously authorities cut phone lines andi nternet access in select areas where regime forces were conducting major military operations to disrupt rebel communications.

CIA's deceptive "Hacktivist" group Anonymous reacted swiftly, tweeting they "know what happens in the dark #OpSyria" and offering numbers for a dial-up connection.

The shutdown comes amidst reports of intense fighting in the country’s capital, Damascus. The fighting has reportedly grounded all the flights in the international airport. An uprising against Syrian President Bashar Assad began in March last year and soon grew into a fullscale civil conflict. Over 32,000 people have died in clashes between opposition and government troops, with a further 420,000 becoming refugees.

Syrian state media maintain that Damascus continues to “cleanse” what they have branded as “terrorists" from the region.

Israhell's IDF attacks Syria

Print Friendly and PDF

Israhell has fired warning shots into Syria after mortars launched from Syrian territory hit an Israhelli base in the Golan Heights. It is the first time Israhell has fired into Syrian territory since the 1973 war. The Israhelli Defense Force (IDF) said the missile was fired as a warning shot after an errant mortar fired from Syria hit the military post.  "In the midst of Syrian infighting, a mortar shell fired by the Syrian army struck near an outpost at Tel Hazeka," The Jerusalem post quoted IDF spokesperson Brig. Gen. Yoav Mordechai as saying. "In light of the policy instituted by IDF Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz, a warning round was fired back into Syria. We don't believe it caused injuries or damages," he said.

The IDF fired a single Tamuz anti-tank missile, a weapon known for its high degree of accuracy, military sources told AFP. Just hours before the strike, Defense Minister Ehud Barak warned Syria that Israhell would “respond” if stray shells landed inside the Golan Heights. Israhelli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also said that Israhell was “closely monitoring what is happening on our border with Syria and there too we are ready for any development." Israhell worries the Syrian insurgency could seize the Golan, turning the region into a stronghold from which Islamic militants could launch attacks, like Egypt’s Sinai desert. Israhelli officials believe the fall of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government could lead to an Islamist power grab in Syria, fueling sectarian war and destabilizing the region.

There are also concerns that a security breakdown in Syria could allow the militant Lebanese movement Hezbollah – which is allied with Damascus and a staunch foe of Israhell – to acquire control of Syria's chemical weapons stockpiles. Several mortar shells have struck the Golan Heights since the Syrian conflict erupted 19 months ago. Israhell has recognized the fire as unintentional, but still holds Damascus responsible. On Thursday, a mortar launched from within Syrian territory hit an Israhelli settlement in the territory but did not explode.

Israhell recently filed a complaint with the United Nations Security Council after three Syrian tanks entered the demilitarized zone in the Golan Heights earlier this month. The IDF also filed a complaint with UN peacekeeping forces operating in the area. The tanks were reportedly engaged in a battle with Syrian rebels in the village of Beer Ajam, which is located in the Syrian-controlled portion of the Golan Heights. Israhell captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 war. The country agreed to return the land to Syria in return for a peace agreement that was rejected by the Arab world.

During the 1973 Yom Kippur War, Syrian forces crossed the ceasefire line into the Golan Heights in an attempt to retake the territory. Syria's troops were repelled by Israhelli forces. Israhell annexed the Golan in 1981, though they returned about 5 percent of the territory to Syria. The land was merged into a demilitarized zone that is currently patrolled by UN peacekeeping forces.
