History Distorted: Columbus was NOT the First To Cross The Atlantic

Print Friendly and PDF

The old poem that most American school children recognize begins “In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue…” Indeed, in the year 1492, Christopher Columbus (whose real name in Italian was Cristoforo Colombo) sailed across the Atlantic in the name of the Spanish crown and landed in the Caribbean part of North America. For hundreds of years, it has simply been accepted that Columbus was the first explorer to valiantly sail across the sea and “discover” the Americas. However, this theory no longer stands up to modern scholarship.

It goes without saying that the first people to truly discover America were the ancestors of the Native Americans, who probably crossed into North America through Russia and Alaska about 12,000 years ago. Discussion of the “discovery” of the Americas by Europeans, Africans, or Asians is an insult to the history of its indigenous peoples. That said, the first daring souls to cross the Atlantic Ocean by boat are important to know, and the theory of Columbus does no justice to their story.

While the common knowledge about Columbus is that he lived in a time where everyone assumed the world was flat, this is clearly not the case. Ancient Greek scholars such as Aristotle and Pythagoras suggested that the earth was in fact, round. It was during the Muslim Golden Ages (c. 750-1100s) that advanced scholarship into the shape and size of the earth began. Contrary to what most people may believe, in those years, it was common understanding that the earth was not flat. The debate, instead, was about exactly how large the earth was. In the early 800s, the Abbasid Caliph al-Ma’mun assembled the brightest minds of the day (including al-Khawarizmi) in Baghdad who calculated the earth’s circumference and were off by only 4% of it’s actual size.

Knowing that the earth was round, and knowing its size to a very good degree of accuracy (without the modern technology we have today), some intrepid Muslims must have attempted to go around the world, hundreds of years before Columbus. The proof of these voyages is in front of us, in black and white.

Muslim Spain

Al-Masudi’s world map of 956, showing the “unknown land” across the Atlantic across from Africa
The great Muslim historian and geographer, Abu al-Hasan al-Masudi wrote in 956 of a voyage in 889 from al-Andalus (Muslim Spain). The voyage left from the port of Delba (the same place Columbus’ voyage would begin) and sailed for months westward. They eventually found a large landmass across the ocean where they traded with the natives, and then returned to Europe. Al-Masudi records this land across the ocean in his famous map and refers to it as “the unknown land”.

Two more voyages from Muslim Spain to the Americas are recorded in history. One was in 999 and was led by Ibn Farrukh, from Granada. The other is recorded by the genius mind of the geographer al-Idrisi, who worked in the multi-cultural and religiously tolerant Sicily of King Roger II in the 1100s. He wrote of a group of Muslims who sailed west from Lisbon for 31 days and landed on an island in the Caribbean. They were taken prisoner by the Native Americans on that island for a few days. Eventually, they were freed when a translator who lived among the natives that spoke Arabic arranged for their release. They eventually sailed back to al-Andalus and told their tale. The important part of this account is the existence of an Arabic speaker among the natives, indicating that there must have been more unrecorded contact between the Arab world and the Americas.

West Africa

There is another part of the Muslim world that had contact with the Americas before Columbus. In West Africa in the 1300s, a powerful and incredibly wealthy empire called Mali existed. The most famous leader of this empire was Mansa (king) Musa. The most memorable event of his reign was his epic hajj journey in 1324. The caravan of over 60,000 people made an impression everywhere they went, including Egypt, where Mansa Musa told the story of how he came to power. His brother, Abu Bakr was the Mansa before he was. During his reign, Abu Bakr sent a fleet of 400 ships to explore the Atlantic Ocean. Only 1 ship returned, but reported that they found a land across the ocean. Mansa Abu Bakr then outfitted a fleet of 2000 ships, which he sailed with personally, that sailed west into the ocean. They were never heard from again.

While there is no record in Mali of the result of that voyage, there is evidence of their arrival in the Americas. There are numerous archaeological sites in North and South America that attest to that Malian presence. Early Spanish explorers and pirates recorded abandoned cities in Brazil that had inscriptions identical to the language of the Mandinka (the people of Mali). More inscriptions in the Mandinka language were found in the United States as well. Near the Mississippi River, many inscriptions exist that recorded their exploration of the Americas. In Arizona, an inscription was found that reads “The elephants are sick and angry. At present there are many sick elephants”. This inscription also includes a rough sketch of an elephant. Elephants are not native to the Americas. They were brought by the Mandinka to the Americas, and the inscriptions are proof of Mansa Abu Bakr’s successful journey over 100 years before Columbus.

The Ottoman Empire

In 1929, an amazing discovery was made in Istanbul, Turkey. A map drawn in the year 1513 by the Ottoman cartographer, Piri Reis was found. Reis wrote that his map was based on earlier sources, including ancient Greek and Arabic maps, including maps by Christopher Columbus, who had sailed only 21 years earlier. What is remarkable about this map is the level of detail of the map, which forced historians to re-evaluate the Columbus theory of exploration.
The Piri Reis map of 1513

The map clearly shows the eastern coast of South America, which is in the correct position with regards to Africa. The coast of Brazil is shown in incredible detail, with many rivers accurately placed on the map. Although Reis used Columbus’s maps as a source, Columbus never went to South America, so Reis must have gotten that from earlier Muslim maps that he used as sources. Furthermore, Reis’s map includes the Andes Mountains, which were not even explored by Europeans until the 1520s, a full decade after the drawing of Reis’s map!

Piri Reis based his map on earlier sources, which clearly had a very good understanding of the Americas and had explored the area well before the first Europeans. The map is perhaps the strongest physical evidence of Muslim exploration of the Americas before Columbus

What Did Columbus Say?

With all of this evidence of Muslim exploration before Columbus’s voyage in 1492, is it possible that Columbus himself knew he was not the first? It’s more than likely to be the case. Columbus sailed from Spain in the same year the last Muslim dynasty of Iberia was destroyed in the Reconquista. Many of the people of Iberia were still Muslims, and carried with them the knowledge of the Muslim Golden Ages. Numerous people on Columbus’s voyage were Moriscos, Muslims who were forced to convert to Catholicism or die. Columbus could have heard from Spain’s Muslims of the New World and was thus inspired to go exploring.

Once he got to the Americas, Columbus records numerous examples of Muslims already present. He commented on the gold that the natives had, which was made the same way, in the same alloy, as the Muslims of West Africa did. Furthermore, Columbus records that the native word in that area for gold is guanin, which is very similar to the Mandinka word for gold, ghanin, which probably comes from the Arabic word for wealth, ghina’.

In 1498, Columbus recorded seeing a ship loaded with goods, heading towards America, filled with Africans who were probably on their way to trade with Native Americans. Columbus also records in his journal that Native Americans told him of black Africans who came regularly to trade with them.

Even Columbus knew that he was not the first to cross the Atlantic Ocean.

Conclusions

Clearly, the theory that Columbus discovered America is nothing but an old tale that has not stood the test of time. There is no doubt that the Columbian Era was a pivotal time in world history that changed the way of life in the Americas and Europe forever. However, he was not the first to make the crossing to the Americas. Evidence exists from the Arabs, West Africans, and Ottomans of Muslim voyages to the Americas well before Columbus and Christian Europe. For whatever reason, the textbooks continue to extoll the voyage of Columbus and the courage of his crew, the “first” to make it across the Atlantic. This idea clearly needs to be re-examined in light of evidence from earlier Muslim explorations, to bring their contributions to the general public.

Message of Sultan Salahuddin Ayyubi (r.a) to the Muslim Youth

Print Friendly and PDF

The following words are from Sultan Salahuddin Ayyubi (r.a) translated from the book, Dastan Emaan Ferosho ki by Al Tamish. Read and absorb it to be part of the army of Ghazwa-e-Hind, as we shall follow our true Muslim leaders only!
"Remember that no non-Muslim can ever be the friend of any Muslim. The Crusaders are incapable to confront us in battlefields, their tactics have failed, and that is why they are trying to eliminate patriotism and religion from the minds of the emerging Muslim generation. The weapon they are using is jeopardous. It is mental extravagance, sluggishness and pretermission. To generate all three of these dreadful elements in you, Christians and Jews have united. Jews by the means of their women are advocating animal spirit and making you drug addicts. I will not say that animal spirit and addiction will wreck your afterlife and you will make way in hell. I want to say that these dreadful elements will shape your life in this world like hell. What you think is the flavour of paradise; it is the torment of hell. You will be the slaves of Crusaders who will roam about humiliating your sisters, the pages of Qura’an will flutter in your alleys and your Masjids will become stables."

"If you want to live like a dignified nation then do not forget your traditions. Crusaders on one front are tyrannizing you and on the other are craving you for wealth. A Muslim is inconvincible to luxury. Your wealth is your character and faith. This is a proof off vanquishment of the Crusaders that they have made their daughters shameless to try to mold you as their slaves. Sons of my nation! Secure your character. Keep yourself in control."

"An oppressive leader in actuality is a weak leader. He attempts to defeat his rivals with tyranny and violence or by creating greed for wealth. You are the future, we are the past. The enemy by terminating the coruscant past from your minds is trying to stuff it with their own blackening ideology and welfare so that the future of Islam is hazy. Recognize your importance. The enemy is trying to suspend you because you are bloodcurdling."

"Keep your eyes not on today but on tomorrow because the eyes of your enemy are on the tomorrow of your religion. You’ve seen what the Kuffaar are doing today, if you occupy yourselves with mental extravagance then all the Islamic nations will be impaired. Do not let your emotions and zest take over you. Do not let your emotions take over your mind. Avoid temptation. Keep yourself in control. Precaution is a must. First organize yourselves then form a leadership."

"If people who carry arms are faithful and sincere to their religion then intrusions from outside and the conspiracies within the state can in no way harm you. Take your eyes further than the borders. There are no borders for an Islamic Empire. The day you and this glorious  religion of Islam is restricted to borders, that day you should know that you will be imprisoned in your own dungeon. Then your boundaries shall shrink. Take your eyes further than the Roman Sea. Temples cannot cease your way. Do not be afraid of the flares within your condo. They will be extinguished in just one blow. Stay away from only two curses; dashed hopes and mental extravagance. A human first gets dashed hopes, then through mental extravagance takes the easy way out."

"The way to defend yourself is, when your enemy takes his sword out of sheathe, your sword should chop his neck. If he is to storm you tomorrow, you should storm upon him today."

The Islamic Education System vs. The Western Education System

Print Friendly and PDF

The youth of this generation are the leaders and governors of the future. Consequently their education, ways of thinking and values are of great importance in shaping the world of tomorrow. In this short treatise we will explore some of what the Western Education system offers our children and we will present the true alternative Education system as it will be under the Islamic State, which is soon to come, Insha’Allah.
Islam's policy regarding seeking knowledge and education has always been aimed at building the Islamic mentality and the Islamic disposition (tendencies or inclination), which together form the Islamic personality. Islam develops a comprehensive understanding about life. And through this understanding, it shapes our actions; it also shapes our likes and dislikes. Children would, therefore, not only perform their Islamic duties, but they would do so with pleasure. Islam has dealt with both of these matters and linked them directly to the 'Aqeedah (creed), so some of its texts deal with the thought (the mentality) and other texts deal with the tendencies (the emotions).

“Read in the name of your Lord Who created. He created man from a clot. Read and your Lord is Most Honorable, Who taught (to write) with the pen. Taught man that he knew not.” [Qur’an: 96: 1-5]

Al-Azhar University in Cairo is one of the oldest operating universities in the world. The Islamic university is connected to the beautiful and historic Al-Azhar Mosque

During most of Islamic history, every major city within the Khilafah possessed public and private libraries. Libraries such as Cordoba and Baghdad boasted collections of over 400,000 books. Arabic became the most important scientific language. The Muslims use of the Zero, which was previously absent in mathematical Sciences enabled great advances, solving problems that for centuries remained unsolved.
Muslim mathematicians devised and developed algebra and the concept of algorithms were thought up by Al Khwarizmi. Ibn Sina’s textbook of medicine (Al Qanun) was used as a standard reference in Europe for almost 600 years. Muslims had developed the mechanical robots. Science flourished under the Islamic Education system.
Al-Azhar Mosque
The Muslims were the most advanced in the world in fields such as: mathematics, geometry, optics, astronomy, medicine, physics, natural sciences, engineering and many others. Today the Muslim world is plagued by astonishingly high levels of illiteracy. The Messenger of Allah (saw) tackled head on the issue of illiteracy amongst Muslims. He (saw) made the ransom of each prisoner at Badr to teach ten Muslims how to read. The Islamic state would strive to ensure every Muslim thus turns into either a scholar (mujtahid) or a learner (muttabii).

Our Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) said: “Seeking Of Knowledge Is An Obligation Upon Every Muslim, Be It A Man Or A Woman.”

Lets realize what are the causes and lacking in our current education system which, today, is not producing the greatest scientists like Ibn Sina, Jabir Ibn Haiyan, Yaqub Ibn Ishaq al-Kindi, Abu al-Nasr al-Farabi, Abu al-Qasim Khalaf bin 'Abbas el-Zahrawi, Abu Hamid al-Ghazali, & Ibn Khaldun etc.

Consider a typical day in the life of a Muslim child in a school based on western education system. You drop off your child, feeling satisfied that they are about to enter an environment that is safe and secure. Lets assume that first lesson is geography. The child will be taught about the different countries: its resources, population, peoples and culture, language, its national flag etc And many of these will inevitably be of Muslim countries. It all seems quite harmless until you realize that Islam does not recognize most of these countries as separate identities. Islam looks to the Muslims as one nation not separated by these national identities which have been designed to cause disunity amongst the Muslims. Allah (swt) says:
“And hold fast all of you together to the rope of Allah and do not be divided.” [Qur’an: 3:103].

Maybe the next lesson in the daily routine will be science. You expect the child to gain an understanding in science that will further his/her future career. But it is easy to forget that many of the ideas taught in this subject are in direct contradiction to the Islamic belief. After all, many theories, hypotheses and speculations, which have no firm foundation in evidence add which are subject to dispute among experts, are taught as if they are established facts. The Theory of Evolution suggests that humans evolved from apes. The principle of Conservation of Energy proposes that energy is eternal (cannot be destroyed or created, but just transformed). Humans are put in the same category as animals. The water cycle is presented as a self subsisting system and many more satanic ideas.
Al-Qarawiyyin- university located in Fes, Morocco. Founded in 859, as a religious school, the university is one of the leading spiritual and educational centers of the Muslim world. It is recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest degree-granting university in the world.
The only history that is taught is that of the West. Its wars, its political development, its achievements, discoveries and inventions etc. Islam is not considered as having any important history, having little effect on the world. Its glories are portrayed as just an episode of world history that is now over. Moreover it is taught as a religion that subjugates and oppresses the innocent. The child will learn more about the Romans than of the Muslims. They will learn more about the wars and battles fought in the way of Capitalism rather than the wars fought by the Muslims in the way of Allah. There will not be discussed the Great Ghazwas of Our Holy Prophet (s.a.w), great wars of Sahabas such as the battle of Yarmouk or Ajnadin, the expansion of Islam to Iraq, Persia, Rome, Egypt, rest of Africa, Europe, Central Asia and South Asia. In this child's religious education (RE) lessons Islam is compared to the likes of religions such as Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism etc.
Al-Qarawiyyin
The uniqueness of the Islamic belief is not presented but is diminished. Even labeling Islam as a religion is not accurate since Islam is a comprehensive way of life, covering all aspects from personal worship to governing life's affairs in a state. Even if some aspects of Islam are taught but they are still incomplete and lacks the true spirit of Islam which was present during the times our ancestors. Moreover, education does not only happen in the school. Society itself plays a major role in educating a child. It can be thought of as a bigger school: instead of using blackboards, teachers and classrooms, society employs television, radio, advertising, billboards or children's magazines to educate the child with un-Islamic practices. The child may grow increasingly alienated from Islam. He or she may become more aware and accustomed to non Islam.
Now, lets analyze how the Islamic Education System differs from the Western education system:
  • Firstly, The child's education would be free since it is the state's duty to provide, as a basic necessity, free education for everymale and female at primary and secondary levels. Every citizen of the state must be provided with education of that which is needed in all aspects of life.
  • There would exist an Islamic curriculum with the objective of building the Islamic mentality and Islamic disposition (i.e. inclinations) in the child. So not only would the child's actions be shaped by Islam but also their likes and dislikes would be in accordance with Islam.
  • They should as a result of school understand the halal and the haraam and follow them with enthusiasm.
Let us consider a similar scenario as above. The child arrives at a school in the Islamic State, and begins the day by greeting his/her colleagues and teachers with the greeting of Islam. The child has the first lesson, perhaps a science subject. It could be a selection of the experimental or pure sciences. It would be taught with the Islamic 'Aqeedah (belief) as the basis and an overriding guide.
You as the parent, could rest assured that ideas such as the Theory of Evolution would not be taught; humans would not be considered as advanced animals. Whereas science in the West is seen as a contradiction to belief in God, within the Islamic State science would be a confirmation of the existence of Allah. The child would come home and explain that he/she learnt about the water cycle: how Allah (swt) causes water to rise as vapor from the seas by evaporation and form clouds; then Allah (swt) would cause these clouds to give rain once they were over the lands; and Allah (swt) would cause the rain water to gather and return back to the seas to once again start the cycle.

Allah (swt) says:“Lo in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the difference of night and day, and the ships which run upon the sea with that which is of use to men, and the water which Allah sends down from tire sky, thereby reviving tire earth after its death, and dispersing all kinds of beasts therein, and in the ordinance of thewinds, and the clouds obedient between heaven and earth, these are signs (of Allah's sovereignty) for people who have sense." [Quran: 2:164]
The child's next lesson may be a cultural subject such as languages, geography, history or fiqh (jurisprudence). In geography, the child would be familiar with the Islamic atlas. He/she would learn about the vastness of the Islamic State; how the Muslims are unified in one land under one leader. How its resources are managed according to Islam; its citizens, whether Muslim or non Muslims working together under one system.

The child would learn to be proud of being part of the leading nation. In languages the child would team the language of the Qur'an, not French or German (these could be studied in higher or further education). The child would not have to go to additional out of school Arabic lessons. He/she could read and understand the Qur'an, or refer to books in Arabic. In history, the child would be exposed to the rich Islamic history. He/she would study the different Khulafa'a and their achievements; the famous scholars and the roles they played; the discoveries and inventions that were made; the conspirators against Islam and how they were dealt with; the positive influence of the Khilafah upon the world. The child could show how the achievements of the Muslims of the Islamic State placed them hundreds of years ahead of their contemporaries (who were in the Dark Ages). They could give accurate accounts of the battle between Salahudeen and the Crusaders, or the life stories of the Sahabah (ra).

The child would gain a sound knowledge of the fiqh (jurisprudence). They would be able to provide detailed evidences for rules in Islam. They may even be able to correct your own actions as advice to the parents. They would understand the respect and obedience that Allah (swt) requires from the child to the parent. The universities and madrassas will not be separated but will be merged into one greater institution of enormous knowledge. Islam will not be taken as a separate element of life but as a part of life which will influence every aspect of a person’s individual and collective life. In the bigger school society, there would also be education of Islam through the state's media. Through television, radio and children's magazines, only Islamic ideals and values would be passed.

All these measures would guarantee the nurturing of a fine generation that could be the leaders of the Khilafah. And the child could contribute to this. In the Islamic State, the Education System is geared towards building the Islamic personality in all the students. This prepares them to live their lives in accordance with the orders and prohibitions of Allah (swt). They will be taught all they need to know about the various aspects of Islam, such as social conduct, prayer, Islamic law etc. In addition they will be motivated to achieve excellence in the fields of science and technology, commerce and the arts. These will be taught within the framework of Islam, such that the hypothetical ideas which are propounded as facts in the West, like evolution of humans from apes and matter and energy being eternal, will not corrupt their minds. In this way, the educational curriculum will ensure that Islam, science and the affairs of life will not be seen as separate and unconnected worlds, but will be regarded as a holistic and intricately interwoven whole. In the society as a whole, which teaches people as much as any school, by means of the television, magazines and radio; unacceptable images of sex, violence and crime will not exist in the Islamic State as an influence over the people. Rather, these unfruitful pursuits will be replaced with stories of the Prophet (saw) and his Sahabah (ra), or other lessons in the Islamic way of life.

Khilafah - A wealth of Possibilities

Print Friendly and PDF

Read on Pakistan Cyber Force Facebook Page

In the month of Rajab 2010 it will be the 92nd anniversary of the destruction of the Khilafah. After tasting the bitter fruits of socialism in the 1950’s and then the mirage of independence throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s, the situation of the Ummah across the world remains the same if not worse. As a result, the problems the Ummah faces have ballooned into many other issues.

The Ummah faces a number of challenges since the destruction of the Khilafah that would need to be overcome for change. Challenges such as poverty, development, healthcare as well as sustainable economic growth, distribution of wealth and industrial development. Unfortunately such a debate has skewed the discussion of change, and whilst many material obstacles need to be overcome by the Ummah, change from some perspectives remains a physiological barrier rather than material i.e. do the Ummah believe change is possible?

Political Will

The birth of any nation would require those who espoused change and those that participated in its emergence to ascertain the nation’s strengths and advantages. Those elements considered necessary but absent would need the development of policies so they can be overcome.

Otto Van Bismarck

Otto Van Bismarck oversaw German unification which set the nation on the path to industrial supremacy. Beginning in 1884, Germany established several colonies outside of Europe in order to overcome its shortage of mineral resources. Bismarck managed to achieve unification of the German lands which many had attempted for nearly a thousand years. Such unification meant German resources and minerals could all follow one unified policy and for once Germany could be domestically developed without facing any secessionist calls.
Similarly Japan by the turn of the 20th century had managed to develop its industries, however the rapid growth of the economy had made Japan painfully aware of its limited natural resources. Japan overcome such disadvantages through a programme of aggressive territorial expansion through conquering the Korean peninsula and surging deep into China in order to exploit labour and resources. In a similar manner the British Empire conquered foreign territories for export markets and utilised slave labour to overcome small workforce.

These examples show that all nations need some very basic ingredients to emerge as a powerful states and ones that can very quickly establish a prosperous standard of living for its people with secure borders. The development of infrastructure, defence industries and energy are fundamental for any nation, the possession of mineral resources would therefore be a strategic strength and a huge advantage for the emergence of a nation. The examples of Germany and Japan are examples of societies – rightly or wrongly, who overcame shortages of the key building blocks for a new nation.

The Ummah’s potential

When one looks at the potential of the Muslim Ummah, the Muslim lands do not just posses the key building blocks for a new nation, but over and beyond this reality the Khilafah would emerge a very powerful state due to the many strengths it will inherit that are present in the Muslim lands.

The Muslim lands posses 74% of the Worlds oil reserves, more than the rest of the world combined.

It possesses 54% of the worlds Gas reserves, has $1 trillion in Gold reserves and a 4.7 million standing army. All of this makes it possible for the Khilafah to field an advanced military and have a strong manufacturing base.

The Muslim Ummah collectively possesses over 700 billion barrels of oil and half of the world’s gas. Both the worlds key energy sources. It is for this reason the Muslim countries produce half of the world’s daily oil requirement and 30% of the world’s gas needs. Alongside this Saudi Arabia posses the worlds largest oil field, whilst Qatar and Iran posses the worlds largest gas field.

The Ummah globally number 1.6 billion, more importantly over 60% of the Ummah is below the age of 28. The importance of a large population is critical for domestic economic development and defence. This large pool of labour means the nation can be constructed at a faster pace rather than taking decades before it was able to become self sufficient.

Alongside this the Ummah will inherit many advantages. The geographical distribution of the Ummah and the Muslim lands means some of the world’s key strategic waterways and airspace will be in the hands of the Muslims. 40% of the world’s oil passes through the Straits of Hormuz waterway that straddles between the Gulf of Oman in the southeast and the Persian Gulf in the southwest. This fact alone makes it the most important waterway in the world. The Suez Canal that passes through Egypt is considered one of the world’s most important waterways as it links Asian markets to the Mediterranean and Europe. 7.5% of global sea trade transits the canal. Similarly Muhammad (saw) ensured that key trade routes in the Hijaz were under Islamic control, which severely weakened the enemies of Islam to manoeuvre and weaken the Ummah.

Whilst many in the Ummah live in severe poverty, this by no means is due to the absence of agriculture in the Muslim lands. In fact, with the right polices the Khilafah can become the world’s bread basket. Egyptian agriculture takes place in some 6 million acres of fertile soil in the Nile Valley and Delta, It has made Egypt amongst the worlds largest agricultural producers and is the worlds largest producer of dates, second largest producer of geese meat and the worlds third largest producer of buffalo and camel meat. Pakistan not only irrigates more land than the whole of Europe combined, but Pakistan is also the 2nd largest producer of chickpeas, buffalo meat and milk, the 4th largest producer of apricot, cotton, goat’s milk and mangos and the 5th largest producer of onion and sugar cane. At the same time Turkey is the world’s largest producer of hazelnut, fig, apricot, cherry and pomegranate. The Ummah should be the worlds bread basket. But due to short term policy making and corruption, even with such strengths the Ummah languishes in poverty.

The Muslim lands also posses the world’s largest aluminium smelter in Bahrain, critical for industrialisation, the worlds largest open pit Gold Mine in Uzbekistan’s Qizilqum Desert, the worlds largest aluminium plant in Tajikistan, the world largest coal field in the Thar dessert in Pakistan and the worlds largest producer of tin in Indonesia.

The real problem

Leaders of the Muslim World especially Arabia - Completely sold out!

The real question that needs to be asked is how is it possible for a people so rich and so plentiful in resources, to be so poor in reality? There is only one reason for this and that is the rulers over the Muslim lands have never had any intention of making the right use of such huge wealth for their people. Our lands are run by tyrants held in place by the colonial powers, who on their departure ensured a small land owning gentry or family remained in place. Their primary purpose is to control the countries they rule over, bringing in their tribesman, family members and loyalists to keep a tight grip on the nation. Due to this, development, economic and technological progress is secondary to them, as their primary concern is keeping the reigns of power.

In contrast the resources of this ummah will be utilised by the Khilafah to advance this ummah to the leading state in all the fields of life, as we once were when our lands were governed by the divine system of Allah (swt).

The Muslim lands posses all the necessary ingredients to take its own destiny into its own hands, it now just needs a ruler who fulfils the potential of this Ummah. The Ummah has no need to colonise other peoples or engage in territorial expansion as Germany and Japan and the British empire did, as it has all the necessary ingredients are within its own borders.

Af-Pak Transit Trade Agreement revised - India the loser! - Pakistan gains access to Muslim countries through Afghanistan

Print Friendly and PDF

Read on Pakistan Cyber Force Facebook Page

In one of the most recent developments, Pakistan has allowed Afghan trucks to carry export goods to the Wagah border for onward dispatch to India. The federal puppet government was forced by the hidden pro-Pakistan power centers of Pakistan on Wednesday to approve a revised Afghanistan - Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement that allows Afghan trucks up to the Wagah border. Under the previous agreement, the Afghan trucks were permitted to carry goods only to the Pakistan-Afghanistan border at Torkham.
Pakistani puppets and Afghan puppets in the government had finalized the new agreement on July 19 this year but the move sparked a public outburst. Undoubtedly it was done under U.S.Z pressure for the benefit of India.

Now the new revised agreement goes like this:
  • Afghan trucks will be allowed to carry goods to the Wagah border, but they will not be allowed to carry Indian goods to Afghanistan.
  • Afghan goods will be permitted to pass through Pakistan only in sealed containers having tracking devices and goods will be re-examined and certified while leaving the border at Torkham.
  • In return, Pakistani trucks will be allowed to go through Afghanistan to central Asia, Iran and Turkey.

This revised agreement depicts a clear failure of U.S.Z / NATO policy in the Af-Pak region. This is clearly a failure of the U.S.Z initiative that was meant to provide India a land route through Pakistan to Afghanistan in order to support cross border terrorism by the Indian and BlackWater supported Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. The new agreement, however, brings currents of cool breeze symbolizing the emerging international Muslim Unity along with it and saahib-e-baseerat buzurgs are expecting immense khair and barakah in the coming days.

Alhamdulillah, Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) member countries have finally decided to enforce much awaited Transit Transport (and trade) Framework Agreement (TTFA) by launching a Truck Caravan, which started on Thursday, 23rd of September, 2010. It will move across the region and terminate at Istanbul, Turkey after passing through Iran, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan.

A symbolic send off ceremony was held in Islamabad on Wednesday 22nd of September, 2010 and many top class businessmen and dignitaries attended it. Being initiative of Pakistan, it was decided that the Caravan will be launched from Pakistan and the Trucks of all Member States (One from each) including Pakistan will assemble in Quetta.

Truck Caravan is being jointly organized by ECO Secretariat in Tehran and International Road Transport Union (IRU). The Transit Trade Framework Agreement (TFTA), to provide access to land-locked countries, was signed among the 10 member states more than a decade ago for road, rail and inland water transportation in a bid to boost trade and social activities in the ECO region.

Pakistan being the pioneer member of the ECO is a strong advocate for promoting transit and transport links among the ECO member countries specifically for the landlocked Central Asian States and Afghanistan.

The TTFA lays down a comprehensive roadmap for establishing functional transit links across the region, will provide a way forward for linking the five Central Asian States namely Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan through road with the Ports of Pakistan and surely contribute to streamlining the transport operations and services. The TTFA will boost trade activities coupled with social links in the region as the member countries have already enhanced regional cooperation in areas such as trade, industry, transport & communications, energy and information technology.

The need for cooperation among the ECO member countries is also reinforced by the common challenges faced by them. Besides the latest despicable Islamo-Phobic acts by the zionist powers, these challenges include poverty, degradation of environment, food scarcity, threat of terrorism and extremism, narcotics trade, threat of epidemic diseases and the impact of global financial crisis.

Over the years Pakistan has made steady progress towards improving potential trade and transit links through up-gradation of national transport infrastructure and establishment of functional region-wide transit corridors. This up-gradation has provided a viable option to the Central Asian Republics for transit links.

Considering the importance of sea port access to the landlocked countries and the fact that these road connections would provide shorter route to these States, Pakistan has planned to develop a new National Trade Corridor (NTC) linking upcountry in North with Ports in southern cities of Karachi and Gawadar in order to reduce travel time and operating costs.

Transit transport will enhance social links among the ECO countries as well as they have interacted over the centuries through the fabled Silk Route. The route facilitated not just traders and invaders but also philosophers, saints, thinkers and artisans. This interaction was intense and spread over several centuries. As a result, today, the people of the region share religious, spiritual, cultural, linguistic and ethnic commonalities.

These commonalities are even more pronounced in case of Pakistan. Our religious undercurrents, cultural traditions, language and even cuisine have predominantly Central Asian roots. The historic cross currents of ideas, civilization and culture among the ECO countries had been innately strong.

Under the colonial rules of British in South Asia and some seventy years of Soviet control of Central Asia the interaction among the countries in the region was assiduously curtailed but remained intact symbolically by travel, trade, migration and even conquest. The Silk Route, both physically and in terms of ideas, put down idle but the inherent regional similarities could not be eliminated as the effects of shared millennia of history could not be reversed by the antics of the Great Game.

Scope and potential exist in the region offer inter-regional economic and political activity for the nations in the area. The population of Central Asian States (CARs) is only 65 million but they are extremely rich in energy resources and other raw materials, such as gold, uranium, iron and non-ferrous metals.

Central Asia has 150 billion barrels of crude oil and almost 1234 trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves and Pakistan affords a ready market for these resources.

Over the years Pakistan has made steady progress towards improving potential trade and transit links through up-gradation of national transport infrastructure and establishment of functional region-wide transit corridors. This up-gradation has provided a viable option to the Central Asian Republics for transit links.

Gawadar seaport is a significant project in this regard. Future trade patterns envision substantial cargo from CARs and Afghanistan. Gawadar’s role in oil transportation across the regions is also envisaged.

Karakoram Highway (KKH), built with the assistance of our great friend China, affords access to Central Asia through China. A Quadrilateral Agreement for Traffic in Transit brings together Pakistan, China, Kyrgyz Republic and Kazakhstan through KKH. Pakistan is also pursuing import of hydroelectricity and natural gas from Central Asia. We have credible international backing for the two projects.

E.C.O states at the center of the globe

The ECO member states, which include Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan have declared their intention to make improvements in the regional transportation and communications infrastructure by signing  TTFA. It is good effort to boost trade and commerce activities but there are many hurdles to enforce the TTFA in letter and spirit.

An inadequate regional transport infrastructure has always been the major obstacle to implement the TTFA as links among the members are poor, and even existing networks are in disrepair. For example, as much as 60 percent of the road and bridge system in war-ravaged Afghanistan is in need of replacement. Many observers say ECO is unlikely to thrive until a comprehensive infrastructure is in place.

ECO’s vision for the development of transport and communications networks was first outlined in Ashgabat Declaration of 1997, which called for the formation of a permanent commission to oversee infrastructure improvements. The document called for the creation of a network of roads, railways and ports that would make ECO goods easily exportable via shipping hubs in Iran, Pakistan and Turkey.

Subsequently, ECO established a program of action that began in 1998 and runs through 2007. The program outlines 12 objectives to stimulate trade and facilitate the movement of goods from landlocked regions to existing ports include the construction of a Trans-Asian railway; development of better border customs facilities; the establishment of a common postal area; the development of a Transit Transport Framework Agreement; the creation of an information mechanism to manage inter-state commerce; and the development of an inter-state fiber-optic telecommunications system. Other points in the program call for the publication of studies, along with the convening of regular inter-governmental meetings, aimed at stimulating trade.

In the area of railway development, some progress has been achieved. For example, the Tejen-Seraks-Mashad railway linking Iran and Turkmenistan, inaugurated in 1996, increases the access of Central Asian states to the ports of the Persian Gulf and Arabian Sea, as well as to Turkish ports on the Black Sea and the Mediterranean.

However, other aspects of railway development appear stalled. Under a plan finalized in October 1999, ECO sought to promote rail passenger traffic, the first stage of which would have introduced new service from points in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan to Iran and Turkey. The new passenger service was due to begin in early January 2001, but several recent developments have dashed hopes for keeping to the original timetable. The most notable impediments are the continuing civil war in Afghanistan and insurgency in Central Asia.

Financial difficulties are additionally discouraging a broadening of service, as underscored by Kazakhstan’s October 18 decision to halt rail traffic from Tajikistan until Dushanbe pays $1.6 million in overdue transit fees.

Similar problems have hampered development of ECO’s shipping capabilities. In 2000, two multipurpose cargo vessels, leased by ECO, were operating in the Persian Gulf. ECO also had transport ships plying the Caspian Sea. Despite the shipping venture being ECO’s sole profitable project to date, the operation was in danger of being shut down due largely to financial disputes among member states. Some members have yet to fulfill their commitments for contributing to the venture’s capitalization fund.

The lack of follow-up by member states has hampered implementation of other aspects of the program of action. For instance, the TTFA was supposed to be operational by 2000. The agreement was formulated at the fifth ECO summit in May 1998. But as of mid-2000, only Azerbaijan and Tajikistan had formally ratified the pact. Similarly, a project to prepare detailed maps of the road networks of ECO member states has not been completed due to Turkey’s reluctance to supply needed data.

Another major obstacle to ECO’s infrastructure improvement plans is generated by competition from rival economic development organizations. Indeed, many ECO states are at the same time members of other economic blocks, including the nascent GUUAM group (comprising Georgia, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Moldova) and the Eurasian Economic Union, which includes Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan. In addition, Turkey is exploring membership in the European Union. Such overlap, rather than bringing better focus to ECO projects, serves as a debilitating distraction.

Despite all the difficulties and delays, it is absolutely obvious that the signing of this long delayed agreement at this globally crucial point in time definitely carries a concrete meaning and a hint for those who have read history. The rise of Islam as a global force is taking place right in front of our very eyes.  The despicable incidents like Draw Muhammad Day, Burn Qur’an day, Attacks on the Freedom Flotilla, Attacks on unarmed Kashmiri citizens, and unmanned aircraft bombardment on the soil of Afghanistan and Pakistan have finally ignited the hearts of Muslim policy makers by making them revert to the ways of their mighty ancestors and adopt unity on the basis of Islam. I see nothing except khair and barakah everywhere in the near future for Islam.

Baba Iqbal R.A - The Visionary

Print Friendly and PDF

Read on Pakistan Cyber Force Website

Iqbal joined the London branch of the All India Muslim League while he was studying Law and Philosophy in England. It was in London when he had a mystical experience. The ghazal containing those divinations is the only one whose year and month of composition is expressly mentioned. It is March 1907. No other ghazal, before or after it has been given such importance. Some verses of that ghazal are:

At last the silent tongue of Hijaz has announced to the ardent ear the tiding That the covenant which had been given to the desert-dwelles is going to be renewed vigorously:
The lion who had emerged from the desert and had toppled the Roman Empire is As I am told by the angels, about to get up again (from his slumbers.)
You the dwelles of the West, should know that the world of God is not a shop (of yours). Your imagined pure gold is about to lose it standard value (as fixed by you).
Your civilization will commit suicide with its own daggers. A nest built on a frail bough cannot be durable.
The caravan of feeble ants will take the rose petal for a boat And inspite of all blasts of waves, it shall cross the river.
I will take out may worn-out caravan in the pitch darkness of night. My sighs will emit sparks and my breath will produce flames.

For Iqbal it was a divinely inspired insight. He disclosed this to his listeners in December 1931, when he was invited to Cambridge to address the students. Iqbal was in London, participating in the Second Round Table Conference in 1931. At Cambridge, he referred to what he had proclaimed in 1906:

I would like to offer a few pieces of advice to the youngmen who are at present studying at Cambridge ...... I advise you to guard against atheism and materialism. The biggest blunder made by Europe was the separation of Church and State. This deprived their culture of moral soul and diverted it to the atheistic materialism. I had twenty-five years ago seen through the drawbacks of this civilization and therefore had made some prophecies. They had been delivered by my tongue although I did not quite understand them. This happened in 1907..... After six or seven years, my prophecies came true, word by word. The European war of 1914 was an outcome of the aforesaid mistakes made by the European nations in the separation of the Church and the State.
It should be stressed that Iqbal felt he had received a spiritual message in 1907 which even to him was, at that juncture, not clear. Its full import dawned on him later. The verses quoted above show that Iqbal had taken a bold decision about himself as well. Keeping in view that contemporary circumstances, he had decided to give a lead to the Muslim  ummah and bring it out of the dark dungeon of slavery to the shining vasts of Independence. This theme was repeated later in poems such as "Abdul Qadir Ke Nam," "Sham-o-Sha'ir," "Javab-i Shikwa," "Khizr-i Rah," "Tulu-e Islam" etc. He never lost heart. His first and foremost concern, naturally, were the Indian Muslims. He was certain that the day of Islamic resurgence was about to dawn and the Muslims of the South Asian subcontinent were destined to play a prominent role in it.  Iqbal, confident in Allah's grand scheme and His aid, created a new world and imparted a new life to our being. Building upon Sir Sayyid Ahmed's two-nation theory, absorbing the teaching of Shibli, Ameer Ali, Hasrat Mohani and other great Indian Muslim thinkers and politicians, listening to Hindu and British voices, and watching the fermenting Indian scene closely for approximately 60 years, he knew and ultimately convinced his people and their leaders, particularly Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah that:

"We both are exiles in this land. Both longing forour dear home's sight!" "That dear home is Pakistan, on which he harpened like a flute-player, but whose birth he did not witness."

Many verses in Iqbal's poetry are prompted by a similar impulse. A random example, a ghazal from Zabur-i Ajam published in 1927 illustrates his deepseated belief:

The Guide of the Era is about to appear from a corner of the desert of Hijaz. The carvan is about to move out from this far flung valley. I have observed the kingly majesty on the faces of the slaves. Mahmud's splendour is visible in the dust of Ayaz.
Life laments for ages both in the Ka'bah and the idol-house. So that a person who knows the secret may appear.
The laments that burst forth from the breasts of the earnestly devoted people. Are going to initiate a new principle in the conscience of the world.
Take this harp from my hand. I am done for. My laments have turned into blood and that blood is going to trickle from the strings of the harp.

The five couplets quoted above are prophetic. In the first couplet Allama Iqbal indicates that the appearance of the Guide of the Era was just round the corner and the Caravan is about to start and emerge from "this" valley. Iqbal does not say that the awaited Guide has to emerge from the centre of Hijaz. He says he is going to appear from a far flung valley. For the poet the desert of Hijaz, at times, serves as a symbol for the Muslim ummah. This means that Muslims of the Indian sub-continent are about to have a man who is destined to guide them to the goal of victory and that victory is to initiate the resurgence of Islam.

In the second couplet, he breaks the news of the dawn which is at hand. the slaves are turning into magnificent masters. In the third couplet he stresses the point that the Seers come to the world of man after centuries. He himself was one of those Seers. In the fourth couplet he refers to some ideology or principle quite new to the world which would effect the conscience of all humanity. And what else could it be, if it were not the right of self-determination for which the Muslims of the sub-continent were about to struggle. After the emergence of Pakistan this right became a powerful reference. It served as the advent of a new principle and continues to provide impetus to Muslims in minority in other parts of the world such as in the Philippines, Thailand and North America.

In the fifth couplet Iqbal indicates that he would die before the advent of freedom. He was sure that his verses which epitomized his most earnest sentiments would stand in good stead in exhorting the Muslims of the sub-continent to the goal of freedom.

Dowry - A norm or a social disease?

Print Friendly and PDF

Like all regions of Asia, Pakistani society is directed by a variety of cultural institutions and traditions, customs, norms and practices. One such cultural heritage adopted as a staunch custom is ‘Dowry’ or ‘Jahaiz’. Dowry means the materialistic things (the property, goods, or estate) that a wife brings to her husband in marriage or a gift of money or property to her man. In actuality this custom was initiated by Hindus hundreds of years ago and now unfortunately, it has migrated into Pakistan as well, running rampant like a disease in all regions of Pakistan.
Dowry or Jahaiz makes the girl acceptable and conventional depending on the amount of it brought by the girl. The larger the amount is, the more conventional the girl becomes.
Is there any such concept in Islam?

Had this been practiced by our Holy Prophet s.a.w? Whose footsteps a Muslim is bound to follow? I don’t find any such concept in the close vicinity to Quran and Sunnah.
What Islam suggests is, when the girl gets married, she is on the receiving end. She receives a gift; a dower or a marital gift, which is called as ‘Meher’ and it is mentioned in the Glorious Qur’an in Surah Al-Nisaa, Chapter 4, Verse Number 4 which says:
‘Give to the woman in dower, a marital gift’
For a marriage to solemnize in Islam, ‘Meher’ is compulsory. There are various cultures which have crept into the Muslim societies, specially in the Indo-Pak area, they give a small amount of ‘Meher ’ and they expect the wife to get a fridge, T.V, A.C, bedroom set, car, house furniture and even a plot or a house these days. A husband demanding dowry from the wife, directly or indirectly is prohibited in Islam. If the parents of the girl give the girl something out of their own free will, it is accepted. A Muslim father is told to get her daughter married away in a most simple ‘Nikah’ ceremony solemnized by a ‘Qazi’ (priest) in a mosque, witnessed by his close relatives and friends. He is not even required to throw a luncheon to the handful of invitees assembled for this occasion. In fact it is desirable on the part of the groom that he offers a reception (Waleema) to his near & dear ones without forgetting the poor people of his society.
The Prophet (pbuh) said:
"The best of the marriages is one which is least burdensome in the financial sense to the families of the bride and the groom"

Hazrat Ali r.a and Fatima r.a exemplify a perfect marriage ceremony which goes like:
After Prophet Muhammed s.a.w had got Fatima r.a’s silent consent for this marriage, he (pbuh) went to Hazrat Ali and asked: "Do you possess anything (which you can pay for the dowry) to marry Fatima?"
Imam Ali R.A answered: "May my parents be your sacrifice! By Allah, there is not a thing of my affairs hidden from you; I own my sword, shield and the camel which I use for irrigation!"
Indeed, this was everything that Ali possessed in this world when he was about to get married!
Allah’s Messenger S.A.W open-heartedly listened to Ali and said:
"Ali, you cannot do without your sword, for you have to struggle with it and defend yourself against the enemies of Allah. As for your camel, you need is to irrigate palm trees and supports your family, and you need it as a means of travel. But I accept the shield as a dowry from you; thus sell it and bring me the money!"

This was the Islamic aspect of the ‘dowry’ ; which these days have been an issue of high intensity. The practice of dowry among ignorant Muslims is a result of the stimulus of the evil practices of the society they dwell in. Islam does not enforce any financial burden on the father of the girl. Though there is certainly no harm in giving gifts happily to the bride from her home.

But these days “Dowry” has been made a standard for marriage. People first inquire shamelessly if the bride’s parents are able to afford a huge dowry of large intensity. If they can not, no matter how educated, well-mannered, sophisticated the girl may be, she remains unmarried. A large number of girls are sitting at their homes despite of being a gem in their self just because they can’t afford a gigantic ‘Jahaiz’ to feed the greedy groom. The most irksome aspect of this custom is that, this is set by the people who don’t even need dowry to run their homes or support the grooms in anyway. When the educated bourgeoisie class leans forwards, the uneducated ones’ can only be expected to follow.
“Dowry” in our society also decides the fate of the ‘daughter in laws’. If the girl has not brought a massive amount of dowry, she is maltreated, taunted and criticized by the in laws wholeheartedly.
Human rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has reported many incidents that are labeled 'dowry death', i.e., the bride has been murdered because she did not bring a sufficient amount of dowry with her. In India there are close to 15,000 dowry deaths estimated per year. Mostly it is presumed that the woman died because of a kitchen fire and they are passed off as accidents. Height of Ignorance!

In this materialistic world people are running blindly towards things that will be eaten by worms. It has become a status symbol but their little game is ruining the lives of the poorer girls. They don’t realize the real, actual and the ideal 'dowry' of a girl, lies in her education, character, honour, dignity  and the ‘tarbiyat’  that she brings from her home! What’s the use of an immense dowry if it can not bring a single happy moment in your life? Futile!
At this crucial time, our society is suffering from severe poverty. People are massively dying of hunger, poverty and illiteracy. The well offs keep on complaining of being low on finance yet they spend lacs’ when it comes to ‘dowry’ just for the sake of maintaining an absurd custom which doesn’t have any Islamic aspect either. In spite of a consensus on disliking the practice, only a few have the courage to disown it.
If we contribute even a few thousands, abandoning this ridiculous practice, several schools, education institutes’, hospitals, charity centers, welfare centers etc can be constructed gradually.
Even a number of needy, destitute girls can be married if you save a gigantic amount you apt to spend for the dowry of your daughter, sister or if you intend to demand it from your wife.
Do you have the courage to break the idol of ‘dowry’ prevalent in your society? Perhaps your step, though at individual level, can be the beginning of the end to this satanic custom. So ready to be an Idol breaker?!
