Death Sentences Upheld for Seven in Egypt over involvement in Blasphemous Movie

Print Friendly and PDF

Cairo: A Cairo tribunal on Tuesday upheld death sentences passed on seven Egyptian Coptic Christians in absentia for their involvement in a movie that ridiculed the Holy Prophet [PBUH], a judicial source said.

The accused, including the director of the movie that triggered outrage across the Muslim world when it surfaced last September, are currently living in the USZ.

Terry Jones, an American pastor based in Florida who is said to have promoted the film and who had also been sentenced to death in absentia, had his sentence reduced to five years in jail by the tribunal.

Egyptian courts usually hand out the maximum punishment - execution in this case for a blasphemy verdict - and send the decision to the state’s top Islamic scholar to get his approval.

Tuesday’s confirmation of the sentences occurred after his opinions were taken.

If the defendants do return to Egypt, they could get a new trial, according to legal experts.

New Blasphemous Film Disrespecting Prophet Muhammad (s.a.ww) to be releasd on 14 Dec

Print Friendly and PDF

Belgium has heightened its "terror" alert level ahead of the release of another highly provocative film "exploring" Islam, reportedly made in cooperation with the notorious Qur'an-burning USZ pastor Terry Jones.

The film's creator is a former Pakistani national Imran Firasat, a murtid who is now no longer a Muslim and lives in Spain. Firasat said he aims to "expose the truth of the life of the Prophet Muhammad" with 'The Innocent Prophet: Life of Muhammad from the Point of View of an Ex-Muslim.'

"If we want to know the truth of Islam, we must go deep into the life of Muhammad to find out whether he was a genuine profit sent by God or was he simply a child molester, assassin and a self-proclaimed prophet", the cursed soul said in the film's trailer.

Firasat also hailed pastor Terry Jones as his inspiration. Jones wrote on his website, "It is our hope and desire that we can present a picture of Muhammad that has possibly not been revealed in the past, that will help people in the Western world, and even Muslims, to better understand this person called Muhammad, his life and teachings.”

Jones is infamous for his incendiary anti-Islam speeches, and for staging a 'Qur'an-burning day' on the 10th anniversary of 9/11.

'The Innocent Prophet' is expected to be a highly provocative film; Belgian police have raised the country's 'terrorism alarm' level from 2 to 3, the second-highest, ahead of the film's online release on December 14. The Belgian Interior Ministry said it was increasing the level to 'serious threat' as a precautionary measure, Flanders News reported.

Police units in areas with large numbers of Middle Eastern and North African immigrants are reportedly on alert. Technical divisions of the Belgian police force have also been ordered to closely monitor Islamic websites and mass text messages.

In response to Belgium's heightened terror alert, Firasat said he might postpone the release of the film so it could be previewed by authorities to ensure “there is nothing in this movie which doesn't fall under the right of freedom of expression and that my movie will not cause any kind of loss to humanity.”

“The necessary modification will be also made if requested by the authorities,” he wrote on trailer's YouTube page. Still, Firasat insisted he is not afraid of “Islamic violence,” and that postponing the release is a token of respect “towards Europe, which is my family.” Earlier this year, Belgium saw riots after the notorious American film 'Innocence of Muslims' film viral on the web, sparking violent anti-USZ mass protests throughout the Arab world.

Court in Egypt orders death sentences to blasphemers over anti-Islam film

Print Friendly and PDF

Seven Coptic Egyptians living abroad were sentenced to death Wednesday by a court in Cairo for their connection to an inflammatory anti-Islam film, the prosecutor’s office said. The suspects are accused of being involved with the production of the film in California, said Adel Al Saeed, official spokesman for the prosecutor’s office. Since the Egyptian citizens were tried in absentia, the sentence would be applied only if they returned to Egypt. Protests against the “Innocence of Muslims” film erupted in September in many Muslim countries, including Egypt, Yemen, Tunisia, Morocco, Sudan, Iran, Iraq, Israel and the Palestinian territories.

The amateurish film portrays the Prophet Mohammed as a womanizer, buffoon, ruthless killer and child molester. Islam categorically forbids any depictions of Mohammed, and blasphemy is an incendiary taboo in the Muslim world. Backed by hardcore anti-Islam groups in the United States, the film sparked outrage after an Arabic translation of the film’s trailer was released online a few weeks before the anniversary of September 11. In Cairo, some protesters scaled the wall of the U.S. Embassy and tore down its American flag, replacing it with a black flag adorned with an emblem used by Islamic radicals. Police and army personnel had to be deployed to prevent demonstrators from advancing on the compound.

The film was also initially implicated in a violent demonstration in Libya that left the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans dead on September 11. Earlier this month, the Egyptian-American man behind the film was sentenced in California to one year in federal prison after admitting to violating the terms of his probation from a 2010 bank fraud case. The amateur filmmaker, Mark Basseley Youssef, also was ordered to serve four years of supervised release after his prison term. He was identified in initial news accounts in September as Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, the name used in the bank fraud case.

America Destroyed by Sandy - 10 million+ Lose Electricity - States Reduced to Ruins

Print Friendly and PDF

NEW YORK — President Barack Obama declared a major disaster in the New York City area Tuesday as Superstorm Sandy pounded the East Coast, killing at least 38 people, sweeping homes into the ocean, flooding large swaths of coastal areas, crippling public transit, and leaving more than 10 million without power. As the East Coast woke up, residents faced the prospect of up to a week without heat, light or refrigeration, while authorities tried to measure the full wrath of the once-in-a-generation hurricane.

The storm weakened as it moved further inland but forecasters still warned of gale-force winds and flooding along the densely-populated coast, where a massive fire broke out in New York City and a levee broke in New Jersey. At least 38 people were killed in the United States and Canada as the storm roared ashore late Monday, pounding several major cities with heavy rain and hurricane-force winds that toppled trees and ripped down power lines.

President Obama declared a ‘major disaster’ had hit the states of New York and New Jersey, an order that cleared the way for federal grants and loans to help storm victims acquire temporary housing and repair damage. Seawater coursed between the iconic skyscrapers of New York’s financial district in lower Manhattan, flooding subways and road tunnels and shorting out the power grid, leaving a half-million households and businesses in the dark.

Further south, the sea surged over vast swathes of the eastern seaboard, turning coastal cities into ghost towns as the high winds grounded flights and shut down rail links, public transport and government offices. The catastrophe completely overshadowed the US election race, forcing a halt to campaigning a week before Americans were due to go to the polls to choose between President Obama and challenger Mitt Romney.

Hurricane Sandy had killed 67 people as it tore through the Caribbean, and reports of more deaths began to arrive after it made landfall at 8:00 pm (0000 GMT) in New Jersey and began to wreak havoc in the United States. A massive fire destroyed at least 50 homes in Breezy Point, a seaside community in Queens, New York. Firefighters had difficulty reaching the blaze due to the severe weather. The cause of the fire was not immediately known. Authorities had ordered hundreds of thousands of residents in areas from New England to North Carolina to evacuate their homes and seek shelter, but many chose to stay on, to the frustration of police and local officials.

Falling trees tore down power cables, plunging what weather experts said were millions of homes into darkness, while storm warnings cut rail links and marooned tens of thousands of travellers at airports across the region. The hurricane sent a record storm surge of 13.7 feet into lower Manhattan, flooding seven major subway tunnels used by hundreds of thousands of daily commuters and swamping cars in the financial district. “The New York City subway system is 108 years old, but it has never faced a disaster as devastating as what we experienced last night,” city transport director Joseph Lhota said early Tuesday.

Firefighters meanwhile struggled to contain a massive blaze in the Queens borough that destroyed more than 50 homes, and in northern New Jersey police in boats pulled residents from second-storey windows after a levee broke. Hours earlier, a power sub-station exploded in a burst of light captured by amateur photographers as a massive blackout left much of Manhattan, and some 500,000 homes across New York City, in darkness. The floodwaters had begun to recede early Tuesday, but the Con Edison power company said it could take a week to completely restore power.

Disaster estimating firm Eqecat forecast that Sandy would affect more than 60 million Americans, a fifth of the population, and cause up to $20 billion in damage. Refineries closed and major arteries such as New York’s Holland Tunnel were shut to traffic. The operator of two major New Jersey nuclear plants said they might have to be closed, threatening half of the state’s power supply.

The New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and the futures markets in Chicago were closed for Monday and Tuesday, along with federal government offices and the entire Amtrak rail network on the eastern seaboard. Obama urged Americans to heed local evacuation orders as he stepped off the campaign trail and spent the day in the White House helping to coordinate the response to the disaster. “The election will take care of itself next week,” Obama said. “Right now, our number one priority is to make sure that we are saving lives... and that we respond as quickly as possible to get the economy back on track.”

Both the Democratic incumbent and his Republican rival Romney were keen to display resolute leadership in the face of the storm, given the memory of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Romney also cancelled some campaign appearances.
Former president George W Bush was widely seen as having bungled the handling of Katrina, which devastated New Orleans. The failure of authorities in the ensuing emergency response tainted the rest of his presidency. The United Nations, which closed its headquarters in New York on Monday, has again cancelled all meetings and conferences scheduled for Tuesday because of the huge damage and disruptions.

In an attempt to lessen damage from saltwater to the subway system and the electrical network beneath the city’s financial district, New York City’s main utility cut power to about 6,500 customers in lower Manhattan. But a far wider swath of the city was hit with blackouts caused by flooding and transformer explosions. The surge hit New York City hours after a construction crane atop a luxury high-rise collapsed in the wind and dangled precariously 74 floors above the street. Forecasters said the wind at the top of the building may have been close to 95 mph. Airlines cancelled more than 12,000 flights, disrupting the plans of travellers all over the world.

Storm damage was projected at $10 billion to $20 billion, meaning it could prove to be one of the costliest natural disasters in US history. Ten deaths were reported in New Jersey, New York, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Some of the victims were killed by falling trees. At least one death was blamed on the storm in Canada. “We are looking at the highest storm surges ever recorded” in the Northeast, said Jeff Masters, meteorology director for Weather Underground, a private forecasting service. “The energy of the storm surge is off the charts, basically.”

In Maryland, at least 100 feet of a fishing pier at the beach resort of Ocean City was destroyed, and Gov. Martin O’Malley said there would be devastating flooding from the swollen Chesapeake Bay. “There will be people who die and are killed in this storm,” he said. Meanwhile, two US nuclear power plants were shut down early Tuesday in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, but the plant operators stressed there were no risks to the public. New Jersey’s main power company PSEG Nuclear shut down its Salem 1 unit on the Delaware River, saying most of its water circulation pumps had been rendered unusable ‘due to weather impacts’.

PSEG said it manually shut down the 1,175 MW unit, but said there were “no issues” in the shutdown and the facility was “currently stable.” The Salem 2 unit was already offline for maintenance when the storm hit, and PSEG said another nearby nuclear unit, Hope Creek, remains operating at full power. In New York, power generator Entergy shut down a unit of its Indian Point nuclear facility “due to external electrical grid issues.” Another unit remained at full power, and Entergy said on Twitter that there was “no risk” to the public or company employees. Late Monday, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission said it was monitoring all plants in the US northeast as Sandy pushed up water levels in rivers and bays, which are crucial for cooling operations at the facilities.

The Oyster Creek plant in New Jersey, which was in a regularly scheduled outage when the storm hit, set off an alert when floodwaters exceeded a threshold set for its water intake facilities. Wet snow and high winds spinning off the edge of Superstorm Sandy spread blizzard conditions over parts of West Virginia and neighbouring Appalachian states Tuesday, shutting one interstate as trucks and cars bogged down and knocking out power to many. The National Weather Service said a foot and more of snow was reported in lower elevations of West Virginia, where most towns and roads are. High elevations in the mountains were getting more than two feet and a blizzard warning for parts of the state was in effect until Wednesday afternoon.

More than 205,000 customers in West Virginia were without power early Tuesday. In Elkins, a city of about 7,000 people, power went out across town before dawn and the only lights were from passing snow plows as heavy, wet flakes piled up to about 8 inches. Staff Reporter from Islamabad adds: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has directed Pakistan’s Ambassador to US Sherry Rehman and Counsel General in New York to reach out to Pakistani expatriates to tell them to stay vigilant and follow the safety precautions laid out by the US authorities after the devastation caused by the storm.

Accordingly, Pakistan Embassy and other missions a number of steps have been taken to stay in touch with expatriate Pakistanis in the affected States. The Embassy and the Consulate General have approached key Pakistani community members through phone and email and urged them to remain vigilant and take all necessary safety precautions as laid out by their respective district governments and to approach the nearest emergency centre whenever needed. According to the decision of the US Government to declare a State of emergency in Washington and to close all offices, the Embassy has also been closed. However, all the concerned staff is on standby to respond to any contingency if required.

Sandy Devastation: Alert declared for Oyster Creek Nuclear Plant

Print Friendly and PDF

As we explained earlier today, the Oyster Creek plant in New Jersey is most likely to be affected by Hurricane Sandy.
At around 8:30 p.m. tonight, the USZ Nuclear Regulatory Commission declared an “Alert” action level for a nuclear power plant in Oyster Creek, New Jersey:
The USZ Nuclear Regulatory Commission is continuing to monitor impacts from Hurricane Sandy on nuclear power plants in the Northeastern United States, including an Alert declared at the Oyster Creek nuclear power plant in New Jersey. The plant, currently in a regularly scheduled outage, declared the Alert at approximately 8:45 p.m. EDT due to water exceeding certain high water level criteria in the plant’s water intake structure.
An Alert is the second lowest of four NRC action levels. The Alert was preceded by an Unusual Event, declared at approximately 7 p.m. EDT when the water level first reached a minimum high water level criteria. Water level is rising in the intake structure due to a combination of a rising tide, wind direction and storm surge. It is anticipated water levels will begin to abate within the next several hours.
AP reports:
The plant’s owner, Exelon Corp., said power was also disrupted in the station’s switchyard, but backup diesel generators were providing stable power, with more than two weeks of fuel on hand.
And Reuters notes:
The NRC spokesman said if the flood waters continued to rise, it could affect the reactor’s service water pumps, which are used for shut-down cooling and to cool the spent-fuel pool.
Since the plant was already shut for refueling, the NRC spokesman said the company could use water from the fire hose to cool the spent-fuel pool if necessary.
See this for details on the spent fuel pools at Oyster Creek.
Update from Reuters:
Water levels at the plant rose by more than 6.5 feet, potentially affecting the pumps that circulate water through the plant, an NRC spokesman said.
***
A further rise to 7 feet [only 6 more inches?] could submerge the service water pump motor that is used to cool the water in the spent fuel pool.
The spokesman said the company could use water from a fire hose to cool the pool if necessary. The used uranium rods in the pool could cause the water to boil within 25 hours without additional coolant; in an extreme scenario the rods could overheat, risking the eventual release of radiation.

France Vows to kick out Muslims

Print Friendly and PDF

France’s Zionist government vowed Thursday to do more to "integrate" the country’s Muslims but warned that it would not tolerate the country becoming a hotbed of so-called Islamic "radicalism".

In a speech marking the inauguration of the Strasbourg Grand Mosque, the biggest Islamic place of worship ever built on French soil, Interior Minister Manuel Valls pledged to come down hard on suspected extremists, warning that foreign activists trying to stir up trouble would be immediately deported.

But he also held out an olive branch to the country’s four million Muslims by promising state help for the construction of more mosques and for the training of Muslim clerics.

“Islam has its place in France because the Islam of France, it is a part of France,” he told representatives of the Catholic, Jewish and Protestant communities attending the official opening of the mosque capable of hosting 1,500 people.

Relations between the French state and a Muslim community that has its roots in former colonies Algeria and Morocco have been strained in recent years by a string of controversies pitting their faith against France’s secular tradition.

Legislation introduced under Sarkozy which bans women from wearing full veils in public is widely resented and long-running debates over halal methods of animal slaughter and whether public prayers should be authorised have added to tensions linked to the economic marginalisation of many Muslims.

Valls warned Thursday that he would not “hesitate to expel those who claim to follow Islam and represent a serious threat to public order and, as foreigners in our country, do not respect our laws and values.”

He also made it clear that the Muslim community as a whole had to accept responsibility for tackling extremism, which he linked to a reemergence of anti-Semitism in the country.
“France’s Muslims can congratulate themselves on the singular model that they are building,” Valls said. “Of course it remains fragile, not every problem has been solved or overcome.

“If all religions have their share of fundamentalists, it is in Islam that this raises fears. It was on French soil and with a French passport that Mohammed Merah killed in the name of Islam.

“Anti-Semitism is a terrible scourge and its resurgence cannot be disguised.”

Built within two kilometres from Strasbourg’s celebrated cathedral, the new mosque has a capacity of 1,300 square metres, making it 1.5 times as big as the previous largest one in France, at Evry in the Paris suburbs.

‘Innocence of Muslims’ producer jailed for probation violation

Print Friendly and PDF

The filmmaker reported to be behind the Islamophobic video that sparked anti-US protests the world over has been arrested and jailed for violating the terms of his probation.

Federal Judge Suzanne H. Segal ruled that the California man, Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, should be jailed after a federal prosecutor said he had eight probation violations, including lying to his probation officers and using aliases.

"The court has a lack of trust in the defendant,” Judge Segal said, ordering Nakoula to be handcuffed and shackled in court.

He “has every incentive to disappear,” Assistant US Attorney Robert Dugdale added, noting that the filmmaker has a “lengthy pattern of deception.”

Nakoula, was arrested earlier in the day and brought before a Los Angeles court over the probation violation. The US District Court hearing was closed both to media and the public.

He was arrested after federal probation officials determined he violated the terms of his supervised release, and filed a request to revoke it, said Thom Mrozek of the United States Attorney's Office in Los Angeles.

Probation officers who suspected that he violated violated the terms of his parole by uploading a 14-minute trailer of the film to YouTube had opened an investigation into Nakoula's status, resulting in the arrest.

Nakoula had also been taken into custody for questioning by his probation officer earlier in the month.

In 2010, Nakoula, known under at least a dozen aliases including Sam Bacile, was found guilty of opening bank accounts using stolen identities and Social Security numbers, and was sentenced to 21 months in prison.

One condition of his June 2011 release was a ban from accessing the Internet or using aliases without the permission of a probation officer.

Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen has buried the dead bodies of three citizens on Thursday.
Earlier, they staged hours-long sit-in protest at the Numaish Chowrangi against the killing of Shias in the metropolis and country as well.During the sit-in, MA Jinnah Road remained block, the MWM has announced that Friday will be observed as a day of protest against the targeted murders of Shias and an unjustifiable crackdown on Shias in Karachi.
The funeral prayers of Nisar and Bilal, who were killed on Wednesday in North Karachi and Kharadar areas, were held at the Numaish Chowrangi after Zohr prayer, and buried in Wad-e-Hussain graveyard. However, the Namaz-e-Janaza of Zahid Hussain, a resident of Jafferia Colony, Golimar, was held after Maghrabain at the same venue, while his dead body was taken to Wad-e-Hussain graveyard for burial.Allama Hassan Zafar Naqvi, central spokesman of MWM, while talking to reporters at Mehfil Shah-e-Khorasan Road, announced that Friday would be observed as a day of protest against the targeted murders of Shias and an unjustifiable crackdown on Shias.

The MWM leaders Allama Mirza Yousuf Hussain, Allama Aftab Haider Jafri, Maulana Sadiq Raza Taqvi, Asif Safvi and Maulana Muhammad Hussain Karimi were also present. “In first phase, protests will be held outside the mosques after Friday prayers. In second phase, the protest will be expanded to country level and in final decisive phase, protest will be staged outside the government headquarters and the USZ embassy,” Allama Zafar said.He said seven Shias were killed in targeted attacks during last 24 hours. He said that some state institutions patronise the terrorists who are the agents of the United States and Israel.

He said that targeted murders of Shias had been increased in the wake of a peaceful protest that Shias staged outside the USZ Consulate against the blasphemous anti-Islam film. He said that enemies of Islam and Muslims were trying to divert public attention from worldwide Muslims’ reaction to the profane movie by targeted murders of Shias.“In a bid to defame Islam and Muslims, banned terrorist groups sabotaged Youm-e-Ishq-e-Rasool (SAWW) by arson and attacks on public properties,” he said, adding that the USZ embassy and consulates were directly involved in these plots.

He said that on one hand, terrorists were killing innocent Shias and on the other, police failed to arrest the culprits. Instead, police have launched a crackdown on Shia youths. In particular, SSP District Central Captain Asim Qaim Khani proved him a biased official and he has got training from the USZ. He said that SSP Central had given a free hand to terrorists. He said that police misbehaved with women during raids on the houses. The MWM officials demanded the government to take action against the corrupt, dishonest and biased officials of the police and punish the terrorists responsible for targeted murders.

They demanded that the USZ Consular General Michael Dodman, IGP Sindh and DIG South should be punished for the murder of Syed Ali Raza Taqvi who was shot dead outside the USZ Consulate while he was registering a peaceful protest. They demanded an end to the ongoing genocide of Shias. They demanded that those terrorists of outlawed outfits involved in sabotage of Youm-e-Ishq-e-Rasool (SAWW) should be punished. They warned that if police and rangers do not stop crackdown on Shias, they will stage sit-ins outside the police and administration’s offices in all over Sindh. They said that protest could be continued till the USZ ambassador was not expelled.

PARIS - Fears that a wave of anger in the Islamic world could spread to Europe mounted Tuesday as it emerged that a French magazine was planning to publish cartoons caricaturing the holy Prophet. Satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo confirmed that its latest edition contains several cartoons featuring the holy Prophet that the publication’s editor said would “shock those who will want to be shocked.” The magazine is due to hit the stands today (Wednesday) against a background of protests across the Islamic world over a crude USZ-made film that mocks the holy Prophet (s.a.ww) and portrays Muslims as gratuitously violent. At least 30 people have died so far in demonstrations held in over 20 countries. Charlie Hebdo is no stranger to controversy over its handling of the issues relating to Islam.

Last year it published an edition “guest-edited” by the holy Prophet (s.a.ww) that it called Sharia Hebdo. Charlie Hebdo’s latest move was greeted with immediate calls from political and religious leaders for the media to act responsibly and avoid inflaming the current situation. PM Jean-Marc Ayrault issued a statement expressing “disapproval of all excesses.” The magazine’s editor, originally a cartoonist who uses the name Charb, denied he was being deliberately provocative at a delicate time. Dalil Boubakeur, the senior cleric at Paris’s biggest mosque, appealed for France’s four million Muslims to remain calm. “It is with astonishment, sadness and concern that I have learned that this publication is risking increasing the current outrage across the Muslim world. I would appeal to them not to pour oil on the fire,” he said.

France’s Muslim Council, the community’s main representative body, also appealed for calm in the face of “this new act of Islamaphobia.” Even before news of Charlie Hebdo’s plans emerged, France’s large Muslim community was being urged to take to the streets in defiance of an official ban on demonstrations over the controversial film. Messages on Twitter and social networking sites called for demonstrations to be held Saturday in Paris, Marseille and other major cities, a week after police in the capital arrested 150 people for taking part in a rowdy protest near the USZ embassy. Most messages read “Don’t touch my Prophet”, a variation of the French anti-racism slogan “Don’t Touch my Mate” popular in the 1980s.

Furious Protesters Storm USZ Consulate in Lahore, Pakistan

Several people have been injured in Pakistan’s eastern city of Lahore as protesters, angry over the production of an anti-Islamic movie, storm the USZ consulate in the city. Pakistani police forces fired shots into the air to disperse protesters and arrested some 70 of them but many demonstrators managed to clamber the walls and enter the consulate compound.
Two protesters died on Monday as rallies over the movie intensified, with thousands taking to the streets, burning USZ flags and an effigy of USZ President Barack Obama.
A protester was killed in an exchange of gunfire with police in the northwestern town of Warai, in the Upper Dir district. The second demonstrator died on Monday afternoon after being shot in the head during clashes with police near the USZ consulate in southern port city of Karachi on Sunday, a hospital official said.

Demonstrations were held in several Pakistani cities, including Quetta, Lahore and Islamabad, with protesters demanding the government to expel the USZ diplomats. Outrage and anti-US sentiment is growing across the Muslim world over the obscure movie that insults Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).

Yemen Protesters Storm USZ Embassy over Blasphemous Video against Prophet Muhammad (s.a.ww)

Yemeni protesters on Thursday stormed the American embassy complex before being driven out by police, an AFP reporter said, as angry Muslim protests grew over a film mocking Islam. All protesters who breached the fence of the USZ mission in Sanaa have been ejected, the correspondent reported, as security forces used water cannon and fired warning shots. Some protesters said they saw three vehicles being torched by some of the demonstrators who crossed the first gate where a security kiosk was empty. Thursday is the first day of the weekend in Yemen.

Police fired warning shots earlier to disperse thousands of protesters as they approached the main gate of the mission. "O, messenger of Allah... O, Mohammed!" demonstrators chanted. Protesters have retreated over 100 metres (yards) from the gate, with hundreds gathering near a checkpoint chanting anti-Jewish slogans. "O, Jews: Khaybar, Khaybar. The army of Mohammed will return," they chanted evoking a 7th century war in the west of the Arabian Peninsula in which the Muslims are said to have defeated the Jews. The attack comes two days after four Americans, including the ambassador, were killed when a Libyan mob attacked the USZ consulate in Benghazi, and protesters in Cairo tore down the Stars and Stripes and replaced it with a black Islamic flag.

On Thursday, protesters were back outside the USZ mission in Cairo. Police used tear gas as they clashed with a stone- and bottle-throwing crowd. Protests against the film were also held on Wednesday outside USZ missions in Morocco, Sudan and Tunisia. In Tunis, police fired tear gas to disperse a crowd of several hundred. In other Muslim countries, security measures have tightened around USZ missions. Several governments gave tried to block internet access to the controversial film.
The low-budget movie "Innocence of Muslims," in which actors have strong American accents, portrays Muslims as immoral and gratuitously violent. It pokes fun at the Prophet Mohammed and touches on themes of paedophilia and homosexuality, while showing him sleeping with women, talking about killing children and referring to a donkey as "the first Muslim animal." Mystery has deepened over the film, with conflicting accounts from backers and promoters but no one owning up to having actually directed it. USZ media initially cited someone claiming to be an American-Israhelli and calling himself Sam Bacile as saying he made the film on a $5 million budget with the help of 100 Jews, but no record of such a person has been found.

Coptic Christians have been accused of promoting an Arabic-adapted version of the English-language film in Egypt, where clips were shown on an Egyptian television channel at the weekend, apparently setting off the protests.

YouTube Refuses to Take Down Prophet Muhammad (s.a.ww) Mocking Video

Even after the killing of an American ambassador in Libya, YouTube refused to take down the video that enraged Muslims around the world. Instead it blocked access to the 14-minute clip in the two countries where American embassies were attacked.

Due to an executive decision by YouTube, Internet users in Egypt and Libya will be unable to access the video that sparked public outrage in those countries over claims that it insulted the prophet Muhammad, AP reports.

Enraged Muslims stormed the USZ Embassy in Cairo Tuesday, replacing the American flag with an Islamic banner, hours before believers in Benghazi, Libya set fire to the USZ consulate there, killing the USZ ambassador and three consular staffers.

The low-budget, amateur film, entitled "Innocence of Muslims," runs for 14 minutes and portrays Muhammad as a womanizer who approved of pedophilia. Any depiction of the prophet, full stop, is highly offensive to Muslims – let alone in such an inflammatory manner.

YouTube has left the video up on its site, but due to the violence in Northern Africa, has selectively blocked access to it in Egypt and Libya.

In a rare public commentary, YouTube said in a statement that maintaining an environment in which all opinions can be expressed, and which everyone can enjoy, "can be a challenge because what's OK in one country can be offensive elsewhere. This video – which is widely available on the web – is clearly within our guidelines and so will stay on YouTube. However, given the very difficult situation in Libya and Egypt we have temporarily restricted access in both countries. Our hearts are with the families of the people murdered in yesterday's attack in Libya."

The video was posted in early July by a user calling himself Sam Bacile. It received only a handful of views for two months, when suddenly it was dubbed into Arabic – then shown on Egyptian television, enraging conservative Muslim viewers.

Following the attacks on American diplomatic missions, USZ President Barack Obama condemned the violence and called on American security services to ramp up protection of the country's diplomats stationed abroad.

In the Wednesday statement, Obama promised to "bring justice to the killers who attacked our people." "We reject all efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others," he said. "But there is absolutely no justification for this type of senseless violence, none."

Print Friendly and PDF

A mammoth “Namoos-e-Risalat” (PBUH) rally was organized both in Karachi and Rawalpindi by Religious and Student groups in the metropolis and it demanded of the government to immediately withdraw the private bill seeking amendments in blasphemy law. The leaders of these parties announced to hold public meeting and Long March on 30th January in Lahore, if the government would not accept their demands. Hundreds of thousands of people belonging to all religious schools of thoughts attended the rally and warned the government to desist from becoming a party to the conspiracies hatched to repeal blasphemy laws.

They vowed that they would not tolerate any conspiracy to amend the blasphemy law and were ready to sacrifice their lives for the sanctity of Holy Prophet Mohammad (PBUH). The participants of the rally were carrying the portraits of Malik Mumtaz Qadri, assassin of Salman Taseer and were chanting the slogans of “Death to Blasphemer” and “Down with USA”. The participants urged the government to immediately free Malik Mumtaz Qadri from the detention. Chief of JUP and TNR, Dr Sahibzada Abul Khair Muhammad Zubair said that historical meeting of TNR was the referendum against those who wanted to repeal the blasphemy law.
