Kaspersky: NSA's Surveillance Backdoor embedded in Hard Disk Firmwares Targets Pakistan, Russia, China

Print Friendly and PDF

Throughout the extended weekend, there had been rumors circulating around the blogosphere that a huge NSA hacking story—not originating via Edward Snowden—was about to break, and it was going to be a doozey. Sure enough, it’s all but “official,” per breaking news from Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab, one of the most highly-regarded cybersecurity firms in the world, via stories over the past few hours in Tuesday’s NY Times, Reuters and ARS Technica, among others, we’re now learning that America is the source of the greatest software exploitation (hacking) travesty ever reported.

As you’ll learn in the excerpted breaking stories, below, apparently, the NSA’s toolbox includes its ability to hack virtually every hard drive on the planet (even including those in “airgap” mode, unconnected to a network, via deviously-hidden code on data sticks); then, embed its code in the hard drive’s firmware, so securely and covertly that even a disk-wipe won’t erase the malware on the drive!

Let’s start off with the NY Times’ downplayed and propagandized version of the story (contrary to the NYT’s headline, a review of the Kaspersky Lab Report, available in full, below, indicates that, indeed, there were/are NSA-related hacks in the U.S. Ars Technica provides the most comprehensive and outstanding coverage of this story, which is linked and excerpted further down. Reuters, also linked and excerpted below, provides extremely convincing proof positive that this is a 14-plus-year-long story about the National Security Agency’s hacking efforts, which ARS Technica references as: “…the most advanced hacking operation ever uncovered…”)…

SAN FRANCISCO — The United States has found a way to permanently embed surveillance and sabotage tools in computers and networks it has targeted in Iran, Russia, Pakistan, China, Afghanistan and other countries closely watched by American intelligence agencies, according to a Russian cybersecurity firm.
In a presentation of its findings at a conference in Mexico on Monday, Kaspersky Lab, the Russian firm, said that the implants had been placed by what it called the “Equation Group,” which appears to be a veiled reference to the National Security Agency and its military counterpart, United States Cyber Command.
It linked the techniques to those used in Stuxnet, the computer worm that disabled about 1,000 centrifuges in Iran’s nuclear enrichment program. It was later revealed that Stuxnet was part of a program code-named Olympic Games and run jointly by Israel and the United States.
Kaspersky’s report said that Olympic Games had similarities to a much broader effort to infect computers well beyond those in Iran. It detected particularly high infection rates in computers in Iran, Pakistan and Russia, three countries whose nuclear programs the United States routinely monitors…

The extensive NYT report continues on to note: “Some of the implants burrow so deep into the computer systems, Kaspersky said, that they infect the ‘firmware,’ the embedded software that preps the computer’s hardware before the operating system starts. It is beyond the reach of existing antivirus products and most security controls, Kaspersky reported, making it virtually impossible to wipe out.”
The report continues, “In many cases, it also allows the American intelligence agencies to grab the encryption keys off a machine, unnoticed, and unlock scrambled contents. Moreover, many of the tools are designed to run on computers that are disconnected from the Internet, which was the case in the computers controlling Iran’s nuclear enrichment plants.”
The report indicates that Kaspersky tracked  “more than 60 [Equation Group] attack groups…in cyberspace…”, and “…the so-called Equation Group “surpasses anything known in terms of complexity and sophistication of techniques, and that has been active for almost two decades…”

The NSA’s Equation Group has hacked the products of the following seven hard drive manufacturers (there were actually more than that on the Kaspersky list, but the other manufacturers have merged with the companies on this short list); essentially, this list represents companies that produce almost all of the hard drives in the world:

Seagate
Western Digital
Samsung
Toshiba
Hitachi

Ars Technica’s coverage of this story is nothing short of superb! I strongly recommend it. Unfortunately, due to usage restraints, I’m only excerpting a small portion of it…

How “omnipotent” hackers tied to NSA hid for 14 years—and were found at last "Equation Group" ran the most advanced hacking operation
ever uncovered.

CANCUN, Mexico — In 2009, one or more prestigious researchers received a CD by mail that contained pictures and other materials from a recent scientific conference they attended in Houston. The scientists didn't know it then, but the disc also delivered a malicious payload developed by a highly advanced hacking operation that had been active since at least 2001. The CD, it seems, was tampered with on its way through the mail.
It wasn't the first time the operators—dubbed the "Equation Group" by researchers from Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab—had secretly intercepted a package in transit, booby-trapped its contents, and sent it to its intended destination…
Ars Technica lists the six pieces of Equation Group malware discovered by Kaspersky (from the Kaspersky Lab report; see full report, farther down)…
EquationLaser: an early implant in use from 2001 to 2004. DoubleFantasy: a validator-style trojan designed to confirm if the infected person is an intended target. People who are confirmed get upgraded to either EquationDrug or GrayFish.
EquationDrug: also known as Equestre, this is a complex attack platform that supports 35 different modules and 18 drivers. It is one of two Equation Group malware platforms to re-flash hard drive firmware and use virtual file systems to conceal malicious files and stolen data.
GrayFish: the successor to EquationDrug and the most sophisticated of all the Equation Group attack platforms. It resides completely in the registry and relies on a bootkit to take hold each time a computer starts. Whereas EquationDrug re-flashed hard drives for six models, GrayFish re-flashed 12 classes of hard drives. GrayFish exploits a vulnerability in the CloneCD driver ElbyCDIO.sys—and possibly drivers of other programs—to bypass Windows code-signing requirements.
Fanny: A computer worm that exploited what in 2008 were two zero-day vulnerabilities in Windows to self-replicate each time an infected USB stick was inserted into a targeted computer. The main purpose of Fanny was to conduct reconnaissance on sensitive air-gapped networks. After infecting a computer not connected to the Internet, Fanny collected network information and saved it to a hidden area of the USB drive. If the stick was later plugged in to an Internet-computer, it would upload the data to attacker servers and download any attacker commands. If the stick was later plugged into the air-gapped machine, the downloaded commands would be executed. This process would continue each time the stick was switched between air-gapped and Internet-connected machines.
TripleFantasy: A full-featured backdoor sometimes used in tandem with GrayFish.
More from Ars Technica...
Hacking without a budget The money and time required to develop the Equation Group malware, the technological breakthroughs the operation accomplished, and the interdictions performed against targets leave little doubt that the operation was sponsored by a nation-state with nearly unlimited resources to dedicate to the project. The countries that were and weren't targeted, the ties to Stuxnet and Flame, and the Grok artifact found inside the Equation Group keylogger strongly support the theory the NSA or a related US agency is the responsible party, but so far Kaspersky has declined to name a culprit.
Update: Reuters reporter Joseph Menn said the hard-drive firmware capability has been confirmed by two former government employees. He wrote:
…A former NSA employee told Reuters that Kaspersky's analysis was correct, and that people still in the intelligence agency valued these spying programs as highly as Stuxnet. Another former intelligence operative confirmed that the NSA had developed the prized technique of concealing spyware in hard drives, but said he did not know which spy efforts relied on it…
Update: Several hours after this post went live, NSA officials e-mailed the following statement to Ars:
We are aware of the recently released report. We are not going to comment publicly on any allegations that the report raises, or discuss any details. On January 17, 2014, the President gave a detailed address about our signals intelligence activities, and he also issued Presidential Policy Directive 28 (PPD-28). As we have affirmed publicly many times, we continue to abide by the commitments made in the President’s speech and PPD-28. The U.S. Government calls on our intelligence agencies to protect the United States, its citizens, and its allies from a wide array of serious threats - including terrorist plots from al-Qaeda, ISIL, and others; the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction; foreign aggression against ourselves and our allies; and international criminal organizations.
What is safe to say is that the unearthing of the Equation Group is a seminal finding in the fields of computer and national security, as important, or possibly more so, than the revelations about Stuxnet. "The discovery of the Equation Group is significant because this omnipotent cyber espionage entity managed to stay under the radar for almost 15 years, if not more," Raiu said.  [Diarist’s Note: Reference is to Costin Raiu, director of Kaspersky Lab's global research and analysis team.] "Their incredible skills and high tech abilities, such as infecting hard drive firmware on a dozen different brands, are unique across all the actors we have seen and second to none. As we discover more and more advanced threat actors, we understand just how little we know. It also makes us reflect about how many other things remain hidden or unknown."

And, last but not least, Reuters

Russian researchers expose breakthrough
U.S. spying program

Reuters (SAN FRANCISCO)

(Reuters) - The U.S. National Security Agency has figured out how to hide spying software deep within hard drives made by Western Digital, Seagate, Toshiba and other top manufacturers, giving the agency the means to eavesdrop on the majority of the world's computers, according to cyber researchers and former operatives.
That long-sought and closely guarded ability was part of a cluster of spying programs discovered by Kaspersky Lab, the Moscow-based security software maker that has exposed a series of Western cyberespionage operations.
Kaspersky said it found personal computers in 30 countries infected with one or more of the spying programs, with the most infections seen in Iran, followed by Russia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, China, Mali, Syria, Yemen and Algeria. The targets included government and military institutions, telecommunication companies, banks, energy companies, nuclear researchers, media, and Islamic activists, Kaspersky said. (reut.rs/1L5knm0)
The firm declined to publicly name the country behind the spying campaign, but said it was closely linked to Stuxnet, the NSA-led cyberweapon that was used to attack Iran's uranium enrichment facility. The NSA is the agency responsible for gathering electronic intelligence on behalf of the United States.
A former NSA employee told Reuters that Kaspersky's analysis was correct, and that people still in the intelligence agency valued these spying programs as highly as Stuxnet. Another former intelligence operative confirmed that the NSA had developed the prized technique of concealing spyware in hard drives, but said he did not know which spy efforts relied on it…

Obama Kills 3 Top Journalists, "Destroys" Brian Williams of NBC over Leaking Russian 9/11 Evidence

Print Friendly and PDF

Brian Williams (NBC News)
An astounding new report circulating in the Kremlin today prepared by the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) states that top US newsman Brian Williams of NBC News has been “effectively destroyed” and three of his colleagues killed this past week over Obama regime fears they were ready to release evidence provided to them by Russia proving that the 11 September 2001 attacks upon America were an “inside job” done by their own government.

Brian Williams, this report explains, was the anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News (the most watched television news programme in the US) when after a week of savage attacks relating to common false memories experienced by all human beings was expelled from his post and still faces the likelihood of his being fired outright.

Important to note about Williams, this report says, are that the “stolen valor” false memories he was accused of pale in comparison to those long told by former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton of her being under sniper fire in Bosnia when video footage shows the true facts of this not being so.

Bob Simon
Even more grimly to note, this report continues, is that not only has Williams and his reputation been “destroyed”, this past week three of his most important colleagues, former NBC international reporter Ned Colt, top CBS News correspondent Bob Simon, and top New York Times reporter David Carr, were also killed.

Bob Simon, 73, this report states quoting US propaganda mainstream media sources, was killed Wednesday in New York City in a car crash, and on Thursday Ned Colt, 58, was said to have perished by a massive stroke followed within hours by David Carr, 58, collapsing and dying in his New York Times newsroom office.

Important to note about the deaths of these award winning journalists, and the “reputation destruction” of Williams, SVR experts in this report note, was that the four of them had formed an independent video news company last month and filed the necessary security documents that would allow them access to the Kremlin’s most secret archive of evidence relating to the 11 September 2001 attacks.

In relation to these 9/11 archives held by the Kremlin, this report says, President Putin had previously alerted he was going to release them, and as we can, in part, read: [For English translation click HERE]
“American experts believe that despite the fact that relations between the US and Russia reached the worst point since the Cold War, Putin delivered until Obama only minor troubles. Analysts believe that this is only the  calm before the storm.”
Putin is going to hit once, but he's going to hit hard as he  is preparing the release of evidence of the involvement of the US government and intelligence services to the September 11 attacks.
Published material can prove malice government towards the people of the US and the successful manipulation of public opinion. Attack planned US government, but spent her proxy.  So that an attack on America and the people of the United States looked like an act of aggression of international terrorism.
The motive for deception and murder its own citizens served as US oil interests in the Middle East and their state corporations.”
David Carr
Spearheading the independent video news company seeking to uncover the truth of 9/11 with Williams, this report continues, was David Carr who in his capacity at the New York Times was a champion of Edward Snowden and after having watched the documentary CITIZENFOUR for the second time tried to go to sleep...but couldn't...so he turned the lights back on due to his fears of what his nation has turned into.

Carr had, likewise, this report explains, became “seriously disillusioned” with the New York Times this past year over its reporting of the Ukraine war…and not just its failing to tell the truth, but its actually whiting out the Nazi emblems on the helmets of soldiers loyal to the regime battling the rebels.

Ned Colt
Working with both Williams and Carr on this 9/11 video project, the SVR says, was Ned Colt, who after leaving NBC News remained a lifelong friend of Williams and honed his humanitarian skills while working at the International Rescue Committee, and Bob Simon who remained “extremely regretful” of the US medias manipulation of the public in the run-up to war in Iraq.

After the destruction of Williams, and the killings of Carr, Colt and Simon, this report grimly notes, the Obama regime has sent a “clear message” to the Americas elite media class daring anyone else to expose their darkest secrets.
Even worse, SVR experts in this report state, with the media elites in the US now cowering in fear, the Obama regime has now turned its sights upon the alternative news media and is threatening to outlaw all websites that disagree with them, and has also shockingly backed a legislative proposal from The National Fraternal Order of Police to classify any criticism by the American people against the police as a “hate crime.

With President Putin having yesterday ordered the largest nuclear weapons exercises in history, and three more combat ships joining Russia’s fleet in the Mediterranean, one can only wonder who will be left to tell the American people about the true causes of World War III after the deaths and destruction of these journalists?

Then again, there still remains little evidence that these people even care anymore.

Germany Leaving EU to Join BRICS as Anglo-American Empire Crumbles

Print Friendly and PDF

A shocking new report prepared by the Ministry Of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) circulating in the Kremlin today states that Germany’s Federal Foreign Office (FFO) contacted Moscow this week requesting an accelerated membership course for their joining the BRICS economic community as they plan to leave the European Union (EU), a move Russian experts said would “spell doom” to the Obama regimes “dream of empire”.

BRICS is the acronym for an association of five major emerging national economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa and as of 2013, the five BRICS countries represent almost 3 billion people with a combined nominal GDP of US$16.039 trillion and an estimated US$4 trillion in combined foreign reserves.  As of 2014, the BRICS nations represented 18 percent of the world economy.

Opposing BRICS is a global financial system organized by the West and dominated by the US which forces nations to conduct their international business in the unstable US dollar, making their economies swing back and forth with the winds of policy crafted in Washington, D.C., and New York City.

The West has ceded influence in institutions like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) only grudgingly, and to the BRICS, today’s financial system is out of touch with the changing times, and ill-suited to support the world’s up-and-coming economic titans.

According to this report, Germany became “alarmed” this week after the Obama regime ordered the EU to “ignore and not comment on” the evidence provided by Russia relating to the Malaysian Airlines 17 flight shot down over Ukraine last week proving it was a “deliberate action” ordered by Kiev officials with CIA involvement.

German intelligence sources, this report continues, confirm their US counterpart’s assessment that Russia had no involvement in the downing of this aircraft and further confirm that the Obama regimes case using YouTube videos and Tweets to blame Russia is “unraveling like a cheap sweater” under the increasing realization that dubious social media-sourced evidence is essentially all there is.

Most damning about the Obama regime accusations against Russia relating to the downing of MH-17, this report says, were German intelligence confirmations that these same YouTube videos and Tweets seeking to prove Russian involvement have proven to be “manipulated and, instead, prove Ukrainian military forces were to blame.

Important to note, MoFA experts in this report say, is that Germany in knowing of the coming showdown between the Obama regime and Russia, had secretly planned to join the BRICS nations economic bloc in 2011 when its Bundesbank (Central Bank of Germany) demanded a full repatriation of Germany's entire US$141 billion gold reserve from the US Federal Reserve where it was stored.

On 24 June 2014, this report continues, Germany was forced to give up on its plan to repatriate its gold from the US after being told by the Obama regime that it would only get its gold back in seven years, clearly showing that the US central banking cartel did something nefarious with the metal it had been entrusted to safeguard.

In countering the Obama regimes move, however, this report says, Germany withheld from being converted into Euros over US13 billion worth of its former currency Deutsche Marks, and since 2011 have had their printing presses working overtime printing more.

Making Germany’s move to BRICS and away from the Obama regime even more urgent, this report warns, are the Americans planned attack on the Bundesbank similar to their one on France’s largest bank BNP Paribas that was punished with a US$9 billion legal fee after France refused to cancel the Mistral warship shipment to Russia, and which promptly led Banque de France (French National Bank) head Christian Noyer to warn that “the days of the US Dollar as a reserve currency are numbered”.

Agreeing with Noyer, this report says, is Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff who stated last week at the start of the seventh summit of the BRICS nations that the five big emerging economies “are moving toward a new global architecture”; an economic structure Germany desperately needs as the “boomerang effect” of the Obama regimes sanctions on Russia are beginning to destroy the Germany economy.

Equally as critical behind Germany’s move to join BRICS, this report says, was the Obama regimes CIA spy ring uncovered spying on top German officials causing Germany to order the CIA station chief in Berlin to leave their country.

So alarmed has Germany become over the Obama regimes spying on them, Russian intelligence experts in this report say, their top government officials are now forced to store their smartphones and tablet computers when sensitive discussions take place, and typewriter sales are now surging in Germany too as CIA/NSA fears are forcing even of the most common of people to keep their secrets safe.

As to the American people themselves being aware of the catastrophically dangerous West-East struggle for global economic supremacy now ongoing, and with each passing day is leading to open conflict, this report doesn’t say.

However, in a recent poll conducted by Politico, it found that most Americans aren’t paying the least bit of attention to the war propaganda coming out of Washington…a deliberate ignorance they will surely pay for much sooner than later.

NSA snooping: America's secret Army of Cyber attacks unleashed

Print Friendly and PDF

Subscribe to our Twitter / Google / Yahoo Daily Updates

INFILTRATION. SABOTAGE. MAYHEM. FOR YEARS FOUR-STAR GENERAL KEITH ALEXANDER HAS BEEN BUILDING A SECRET ARMY CAPABLE OF LAUNCHING DEVASTATING CYBER ATTACKS. NOW IT’S READY TO UNLEASH HELL.

INSIDE FORT MEADE, Maryland, a top-secret city bustles. Tens of thousands of people move through more than 50 buildings—the city has its own post office, fire department, and police force. But as if designed by Kafka, it sits among a forest of trees, surrounded by electrified fences and heavily armed guards, protected by antitank barriers, monitored by sensitive motion detectors, and watched by rotating cameras. To block any telltale electromagnetic signals from escaping, the inner walls of the buildings are wrapped in protective copper shielding and the one-way windows are embedded with a fine copper mesh.

This is the undisputed domain of General Keith Alexander, a man few even in Washington would likely recognize. Never before has anyone in America’s intelligence sphere come close to his degree of power, the number of people under his command, the expanse of his rule, the length of his reign, or the depth of his secrecy. A four-star Army general, his authority extends across three domains: He is director of the world’s largest intelligence service, the National Security Agency; chief of the Central Security Service; and commander of the US Cyber Command. As such, he has his own secret military, presiding over the Navy’s 10th Fleet, the 24th Air Force, and the Second Army.

Alexander runs the nation’s cyberwar efforts, an empire he has built over the past eight years by insisting that the US’s inherent vulnerability to digital attacks requires him to amass more and more authority over the data zipping around the globe. In his telling, the threat is so mind-bogglingly huge that the nation has little option but to eventually put the entire civilian Internet under his protection, requiring tweets and emails to pass through his filters, and putting the kill switch under the government’s forefinger. “What we see is an increasing level of activity on the networks,” he said at a recent security conference in Canada. “I am concerned that this is going to break a threshold where the private sector can no longer handle it and the government is going to have to step in.”

In its tightly controlled public relations, the NSA has focused attention on the threat of cyberattack against the US—the vulnerability of critical infrastructure like power plants and water systems, the susceptibility of the military’s command and control structure, the dependence of the economy on the Internet’s smooth functioning. Defense against these threats was the paramount mission trumpeted by NSA brass at congressional hearings and hashed over at security conferences.

But there is a flip side to this equation that is rarely mentioned: The military has for years been developing offensive capabilities, giving it the power not just to defend the US but to assail its foes. Using so-called cyber-kinetic attacks, Alexander and his forces now have the capability to physically destroy an adversary’s equipment and infrastructure, and potentially even to kill. Alexander—who declined to be interviewed for this article—has concluded that such cyberweapons are as crucial to 21st-century warfare as nuclear arms were in the 20th.

And he and his cyberwarriors have already launched their first attack. The cyberweapon that came to be known as Stuxnet was created and built by the NSA in partnership with the CIA and Israeli intelligence in the mid-2000s. The first known piece of malware designed to destroy physical equipment, Stuxnet was aimed at Iran’s nuclear facility in Natanz. By surreptitiously taking control of an industrial control link known as a Scada (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system, the sophisticated worm was able to damage about a thousand centrifuges used to enrich nuclear material.

The success of this sabotage came to light only in June 2010, when the malware spread to outside computers. It was spotted by independent security researchers, who identified telltale signs that the worm was the work of thousands of hours of professional development. Despite headlines around the globe, officials in Washington have never openly acknowledged that the US was behind the attack. It wasn’t until 2012 that anonymous sources within the Obama administration took credit for it in interviews with The New York Times.

But Stuxnet is only the beginning. Alexander’s agency has recruited thousands of computer experts, hackers, and engineering PhDs to expand US offensive capabilities in the digital realm. The Pentagon has requested $4.7 billion for “cyberspace operations,” even as the budget of the CIA and other intelligence agencies could fall by $4.4 billion. It is pouring millions into cyberdefense contractors. And more attacks may be planned.
Inside the government, the general is regarded with a mixture of respect and fear, not unlike J. Edgar Hoover, another security figure whose tenure spanned multiple presidencies. “We jokingly referred to him as Emperor Alexander—with good cause, because whatever Keith wants, Keith gets,” says one former senior CIA official who agreed to speak on condition of anonymity. “We would sit back literally in awe of what he was able to get from Congress, from the White House, and at the expense of everybody else.”

Now 61, Alexander has said he plans to retire in 2014; when he does step down he will leave behind an enduring legacy—a position of far-reaching authority and potentially Strangelovian powers at a time when the distinction between cyberwarfare and conventional warfare is beginning to blur. A recent Pentagon report made that point in dramatic terms. It recommended possible deterrents to a cyberattack on the US. Among the options: launching nuclear weapons.
