Threat From Indian Terror Groups Higher Than Pakistan: Chidambaram

P Chidambaram, Indian Home Minister
Describing home-grown terror groups as experts in destruction, Indian Home Minister P Chidambaram has said the threat from such outfits was pretty high. He also termed the recent Mumbai terror blasts as a “setback” to the government. The threat from them is pretty high, Chidambaram told media persons adding, “They (indigenous terror groups) are no longer fledgling outfits. They have established several modules and they have gained expertise in assembling bombs and transporting bombs.” Chidambaram was asked how serious was the threat from home grown terrorists like Indian Mujahideen (IM).

Asked whether there was a needle of suspicion pointing at IM in the recent Mumbai blasts, he said, “No. I have said they (Mumbai Police) have not shared any details and I am not in a position to share any details.” He said the last reports he got was that Mumbai Police’s Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) has some good leads. The minister added that the country and security establishment had learnt huge lessons in the aftermath of the 26/11 terror attacks. India has also prepared a revised list of wanted criminals to be given to Pakistan. The home ministry has prepared the list after gathering information from all agencies and state governments concerned and handed it over to the MEA to be given to the Pakistani delegation during the foreign minister-level talks on Wednesday.

The revised list of 48 fugitives is “authenticated, verified”, and it is confirmed that none figuring in it lives in India, an official said. Those in the list include Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed, al-Qaeda leader Illyas Kashmiri, 1993 Mumbai blasts accused Dawood Ibrahim, gangster Chhota Shakeel, Jaish- e-Mohammed chief and Parliament attack principal accused Maulana Mohamad Masood Azhar and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin. The Indian government had faced major embarrassment in May when two persons in the ‘most wanted list’ of 50 ‘fugitives’ handed over to Pakistan were found to be living in India. The list was handed over to Pakistan during the home secretary-level talks on March 28-29.
